He was born Sept. 13, 1937, in Luxora and was the son of Virgil Eugean and Ethel Pauline (Anglin) Gookin. He was a veteran of the United State Air Force, retired as a supervisor after 28 years with Whirlpool Industries and was a member of the Denver Baptist Church in Greenwood.
He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Gookin of Farmington; one son, Todd Gookin and wife Kim of Fayetteville; one daughter, Tonya Slater of Farmington; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Anna Grace Gookin of Fayetteville; six brothers, James and wife Ann Gookin, Bill and wife Lottie Gookin and Wallice and wife Martha Gookin, all of Piggott, Ed Gookin of Mablevale, Douglas and wife Mary Gookin of Pensacola, Fla., and Robert Wayne Gookin of Modesto, Calif., and three very special friends from Washington Regional Hospice, Genia Baumgardner, Betty Anglin and Cheryl Zornes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Pauline Gookin; six sisters, Audrey Gookin, Orene Self, Geneva Gookin, Hazel Long, Virginia Lowerins and Eugena Lee, and two brothers, John Gookin and Clyde Gookin.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Aug. 27, in the chapel of the Nelson-Berna Funeral Home with Pastor Mitch Dulaney officiating. Burial was in the Fayetteville National Cemetery with full military honors.
Pallbearers were Guss Robey, Tommy Hall, Dennis Litten, Blake Litten, Greg Wilhelms and Willie Gookin. The family also extend their thanks to Greg Wilhelms for his friendship and for being his caregiver.
