Due to requests for more specialized offerings the Clay County Cooperative Extension Service announced that they would be supplementing their services with more specialists in the near future. In other news 40 years ago this week, there was a "get out the vote" effort for the upcoming general election.
Mary's Chapel Church was set to observe "Layman's Day" with special speaker Wayne Turner, and in service news CM/SGT Marion J. McGhee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew McGhee of Piggott, is now on duty in Thailand.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the features were "The Green Berets", "Island of Terror" and "Bandeleros". Meanwhile, the Southern Belles, Darlings of the Hardwood and Queen's of Basketball were slated to appear at the Knobel Gym Oct. 23.
In sports, the Mohawks moved to 6-0 with a 34-20 win over Lepanto at Parker Field with an estimated 1,600 fans in attendance. The Tribe generated 394 yards on the ground and 84 through the air, and at half time the Marching Mohawk band performed their program "It's A Mod Mod World". Up next will be Osceola at Piggott. It was also reported that the junior Mohawks fell to Osceola 7-19.
Piggott Farmer's Gin is leading the Thursday night lady's bowling league 14-6 over Northern Propane at 11-9…high game goes to Sherry Stinebrook with a 150.
From the ads we find that Art's Lion Oil warehouse, and Art's Red Bird Station at St. Francis, featured anti-freeze for $1.29 a gallon.
1978
There was a rash of traffic accidents 30 years ago this past week, with two occurring on Friday the 13th--one at the crossroads on U.S. 62 west of Piggott the other at the corner of Thornton and Jackson in the city. Meanwhile, it was announced that the annual Piggott Lion's Club auction would be aired on Piggott Video Cable Oct. 23-27.
Eddie Poole and Marilyn Wells were crowned grade school king and queen at the recent Greenway fall festival, Todd Cavaness and Margaret Florkey took king and queen from the high school students. And at the Carolyn Theater this week in time the feature was "Foul Play" with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, while the late show was "Young Seductress".
Births to report included… a daughter, Ashley Jo, to Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Turner of Greenway on Sept. 23; a daughter, Brandy Nicole, was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Owens on Oct. 10…and a son, Adam Wesley, was born to Frank and Donna Staples of Piggott on Sept. 26.
In sports, the Mohawks suffered their first conference loss of the year 20-33 to the Highland Rebels. Dennis Cox, Jay Blackshare, Gary Thompson and Bob Lack did a good job on the line according to the coaches..and Ray Stow led the team in tackles. Walnut Ridge will be next for the Tribe. Meanwhile, the junior Mohawks also fell to Highland as they lost 6-28 to the Rebels..the lone Piggott touchdown came on a TD by Steven Wright. Up next will be the Corning Bobkittens.
1983
The special legislative session called by Governor Bill Clinton was in full-swing 25 years ago this week, as lawmakers continued to struggle with educational funding for the state. In local news, mail carrier Tony Pace was honored as the employee of the year for 1983 from among the 492 people working within the Jonesboro district.
It was announced that Angie Evans and Tammy Donner of PHS will be attending the national FHA convention next July in Chicago..meanwhile, at the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Escape 2000" while the late show feature was "Seductress". (ironically five years ago it was "Young Seductress")
At the grocery store this week, Taylor's Grocery had a 24 ounce can of Sweet Sue Chicken and Dumplings for .79..while Banquet Pot Pies were two for .69.
In sports, The Mohawks fell at Highland 0-8, despite a gallant effort by the defense. The coaches noted that Travis Cashion led the team in tackles with 11 stitches in his head, while Greg Moore, Mark Lewis and Coy Mauldin also had big games. Up next will be Walnut Ridge at Piggott. Meanwhile, the junior Mohawks fell 8-36 to Paragould.. the only Piggott score coming on a Todd Self to Kenny Smith 55 yards touchdown pass. The duo then combined to complete a pass for the two-point conversion.
The Lady Mohawk junior and senior volleyball teams both beat Paragould in the past week, then both squads lost to conference leading Westside.
1988
Governor Bill Clinton was scheduled to conduct a public forum on his proposed 1989 legislative plan on Oct. 20 in Piggott, and then speak at the Industrial Appreciation Day. In other news, veteran auctioneer Charley Hollis, 84, died Oct. 13 at his home..he'd been an auctioneer for 45 years.
Mayor George Cook proclaimed Oct. 23-30 as Red Ribbon Week in Piggott, joining him for the occasion were students Chad Speer, Craig Winberry, Josh Eason, Jamie Harmon, Kylie Howell and Erica Winberry. Speaking of ribbons, a ribbon cutting was held at the new Stewart-Hinkle Value Market.
In other news, it was reported that the outside book return box at the Piggott Public Library would be locked and closed on Halloween night..but would re-open at 9 a.m. on Nov. 1.
In sports, the Highland Rebels came from behind to beat the Mohawks 28-23, despite 120 yards on 17 carries by Ricky Shaw. Up next will be a visit to Walnut Ridge. The junior Mohawks are still unbeaten at 6-0 after a 27-16 win at Lepanto. Phillip Davis had the first TD, while Craig Beck had 113 yards on just six carries. Up next will be a home game against Hoxie.
Also in sports, the Lady Mohawk volleyball team will finish the regular season against CRA, and will then take part in their district tournament at Trumann. The Tribe may be hampered though by an ankle injury to Liz Sale. Meanwhile the junior girls ended their season at 16-4.
