Anne Murray was singing a classic song, "A Little Good News ." The song is as apt today as it was when it topped the charts in 1983.
The song is all about being sick and tired of hearing bad news every day.
Anne was tired of hearing about fighting and shootings and arson.
"There's a local paper rolled up in a rubber band
One more sad story's one more than I can stand."
"Some senator was squawkin' about the bad economy
It's gonna get worse you see, we need a change of policy."
Anne longed to hear some good news. She wanted the headlines to say there was "not much to print today, can't find nothin' bad to say."
Nobody robbed a liquor store today on the lower part of town
Nobody OD'd, nobody burned a single building down.
And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA
We sure could use a little good news today.
Anne said she wanted to hear the anchor man talk about a county fair
And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care.
Actually, it's easy to let the weight of the world settle on our shoulders.
We get burdened down in the senseless killings, corruption, and vices we read about each week.
We long for relief, a bit of laughter and lightness.
Like children of yore, we want to dance in the rain.
We are told to think on the good things.
During bad times and ill health, it is so easy to focus on the negatives.
There are positives in most all situations if we look for them.
A church member had major surgery a few weeks ago. Because of the surgery, he lost 32 pounds. It was the weight he had been trying to lose prior to surgery. So that was a positive that came out of a negative situation.
Yes, this morning I'm in agreement with Anne Murray.
I could use some good news today.
