It happened, years ago

1968

A strong earthquake shook Piggott, and portions of 22 states around 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8. The quake, centered 130 miles northwest of New Madrid, Mo., registered 5.5 on the Richter scale. Damage was minor and the only injury was a boy hit on the head by a falling brick in St. Louis.

In other news, a traffic accident involving a pickup truck and a bobtruck belonging to Elder Oil Co., resulted in minor injuries to Verna Parrish of McDougal. While Mrs. Parrish avoided serious injury, her pickup did end up crashing through the front glass of Cargill Furniture, at the corner of Main and Second. (The current Piggott Times office)

At the Carolyn Theater the features were "Inspector Clouseau" and "The Patsy" along with "The Awakening" and "Counterfeit Killers." And from the ads, Larry King was offering a 10-cent special on shoe shines Oct. 16 only at Edward's Barbershop.

The Piggott Mohawks improved to 10-0 with a 14-12 win at Paragould in the past week, with the game decided by PAT's. The first TD was on a pass to Richard Robinson, while quarterback Jimmy Johnson had a two yard run for the second. The toe of Tim Huffman provided both PAT's to give the Mohawks the edge. Up next the Tribe will visit the Portageville Bulldogs.

1978

The Piggott Library is set to mark Children's National Book Week with a book fair at the community center Nov. 15-17. In other news, the annual pee wee football banquet will be held Nov. 18 in the cafeteria at the Piggott Middle School.

Pam Pollard of Greenway ( PHS class of 1975) a student at Ouachita Baptist College will be student teaching in the Gurdon School district this fall as she continues her education. And in service news, Pvt. Rodney Besserman has completed AIT training at Ft. Benning in Georgia.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "TGIF" while the late show is "Chatterbox." There will also be a special showing of "Born Again" on Nov. 18. Meanwhile, Roeder's Ben Franklin had a special on toys, featuring a radio-control Pontiac Trans Am for $9.97 or Sesame Street Beany Pets for $3.99.

Hunters pictured with the deer they've harvested this year included--Robbie Hall, Sonny Johnson, Dan Peterson from Campbell, Robert Jackson and Bill Russell.

And at the grocery store, the various markets had turkey from 69-85-cents a pound and brown and serve rolls were three for a dollar.

1983

The Piggott school board has voted to join the boards of Greenway and Rector for a combined meeting in the coming week, as the local districts attempt to deal with new state-mandated standards. Piggott is expected to need 10-12 new teachers and more classroom space in order to comply.

Staff Sgt. William H. Pollard (PHS class of '77) the son of William and Theda Pollard of Piggott, was memorialized by President Reagan at a recent ceremony. Pollard, the youngest Sergeant in the Marine Corp. at the time of his death, was one of 239 Marines killed Oct. 23, in the bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut. He was survived by wife Margaret and daughter Stacy.

Plans continue for construction of the new 5,180 square-foot Piggott Library, and an artist's rendering of the new building was pictured on the front page of this week's Piggott Times. The new library will have the capacity for 50,000 books. Meanwhile, construction is underway on the new Piggott Mortuary building at Highway 49 South and Terminal Road.

In school notes, spirit week was held Oct. 24-27 at Piggott Junior High School, and the annual Beta Club induction is set for Nov. 10.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Deathstalker" while the late show was "Country Comfort." And a check of turkey prices at the grocery store included--69-99 cents a pound at the Rebel Market, 99-cents a pound at Taylor's and Foodland had a special at 63-cents a pound with a grocery purchase.

In sports, Coach Ted Box will have only one returning starter to the boys team as they start the season against Greenway..while coach Mike Trantham's Lady Mohawks returns three starters but doesn't have a player over 5' 9". They'll also take on the Tigers in their first game of the season. By the way--the Corning Bobcats (10-1) beat Hughes in the football playoffs, and will take on the AA defending state champions from Augusta in round two.

1988

A feature article this week in time reflected on the 25th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In other news, the policy of smoking in the teacher's lounge was discussed at the recent school board meeting. The board also discussed having a joint meeting with the board from Clay County Central concerning long range goals, and the possibility of a future consolidation.

Meanwhile, it was announced that KAIT's Terry Wood would be broadcasting the weather from Piggott Dec. 2, as the city holds its annual Christmas event. The annual Lions Club auction has been scheduled, and will be held Saturday Nov. 18. And Clay County Sheriff Darvin Stow and Deputy Don Poole were pictured with two 12-foot-tall marijuana plants that were discovered between McDougal and Boydsville.

In sports, the Mohawks will be young and inexperienced this year, with only Tim Mills returning with much playing experience. For the Lady Mohawks they had only one returning starter, and only four of the eight players on the squad have experience, and will look to Mia Crowson for leadership. The boys open against Marmaduke while the girls take on Ridgecrest.

Ira Causey, along with brothers Bob and Jerry, were pictured with an eight point buck taken near Hardy, meanwhile Jason Burkman of Rector harvested an eight-pointer near Imboden to get his picture in the paper.

At the grocery, Stewart Hinkle Value Market had turkey at 48-cents a pound with a $20 purchase, or 58-cents a pound without a purchase. Irby's Super Saver had the birds for 47-cents a pound, and brown and serve rolls were four-for-a-dollar.
