David Samuel Whitfield

David S. Whitfield, 88, of Steele, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin, Tenn.

Born Dec. 6, 1920 in Steele, he was the son of the late Thomas W. Whitfield and Liza Bell (Hatley) Whitfield. He was preceded in death by three brothers, J. L. Whitfield, Thomas Whitfield and W.D. ?Buck? Whitfield, and three sisters, Elisine Whitfield, Irene Batley and Christine Yates.

He was united in marriage to Montana Crawford at Blytheville on Aug. 31, 1941, and she preceded him in death.

He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service at Steele, where he was a rural mail carrier for 40 years. He was also a dedicated member of the Steele Church of Christ, where he taught Sunday school class for many years.

He lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Davie Kay and James Cary of Martin, Tenn., for the past several years.

He is survived by a son, Roy L. Whitfield of Piggott; a daughter, Davie Kay Cary and husband James of Martin, Tenn.; a brother, Douthitt Whitfield and wife Laura of Camden, Tenn.; two grandchildren, John Cary and wife Amy of Columbia, Tenn., and Alan Cary and wife Kim of Martin, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren, Addison and Andrew Cary of Martin, Tenn., Hunter, Jackson and Carson Cary of Columbia, Tenn., and one sister-in-law, Betty Whitfield of Steele.

Funeral services were held Tuesday Oct. 28, at the Steele Church of Christ with John Mundy officiating.Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Steele. Pallbearers were Charles Pritchard, Therron Nowlin, Gary Bruton, Howard Burns and Randy McDaniel.

John W. German Funeral Home of Steele was in charge of the service.
