Jimmie Davis and The Oak Ridge Boys will headline a fundraiser at the PHS gym Nov. 22, to benefit the Pollard Fire Department. The Pollard department was formed in March of 1967, and now boasts 20 members. Meanwhile, a talent contest was held at Piggott Central Elementary school, first place went to Lynn Dehls, second was Sarah Gregory, as both performed on the piano; and third place went to the combo of Lane Hinkle and Dale Harmon as they performed "Dixie" with Lane on the drums and Dale on the piano.
In sports, the Piggott Mohawks suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to Portageville 19-21. The Tribe now stands at 10-1 and will take the week off before closing out the season at Corning on Thanksgiving Day.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the features are "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Hang Em' High"..coming soon "Anzio" and "The Graduate." And the annual turkey supper at the Church of God in Piggott will be held Nov. 21.
Wallace Johnson was pictured with a seven-point buck he shot near Horseshoe Bend, and Clifton Hill was photographed with the three-pointer he shot near Dalton, in Randolph County.
Checking the Thanksgiving shopping list, Greene's Market had turkey at 39-45 cents a pound, while the IGA offered them at 33 cents a pound with a grocery purchase. Patterson's Grocery had brown and serve rolls at .19 a package and canned pumpkin was two cans for .35.
1978
The city of Piggott has been approved for a $109,243 matching grant that will be used to build a new swimming pool complex, lighted tennis courts and a parking lot in the coming year. In other news, Piggott attorney John Lingle has been named local chairman of the Arkansas State Council on Economic Education. The goal of the effort is to insure all students understand basic economics. Meanwhile, the annual father and son banquet was held at the First Christian Church.
Members of Piggott Boy Scout Troop #46 recently joined scouts from Troop #10 at Corning as they toured the Civil War battlefield at Shiloh. Meanwhile, an ad for Piggott Federal offered 9.2468% interest compounded daily on six-month money market certificates with a minimum commitment of $10,000.
In sports, the basketball season is underway and the Mohawks lost a pair to Campbell, then swept a pair from Holcomb. Meanwhile, the seventh grade and junior "B" teams lost to Rector. And at the Pee Wee football banquet coaches Tony Seal, Randy Jackson, Billy Seal and Mark Tanner were honored along with the players and cheerleaders.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "Born Again", the true story of Charles Colson, while the late show feature was "Dirty O'Neal." And Danny Gatewood of Piggott was pictured with a 10-point, 150-pound, buck he shot near Crockett this week in time.
1983
Construction is underway on a 100,000 square foot expansion at the L.A. Darling factory in Piggott, which will double the size of the current facility. Meanwhile, the city council voted to purchase the H. W. Gossard building for $650,000 and in turn sell it to Missouri Research Lab for $1-million to be paid over a 30 year period. The building now houses Aerial Bouquets.
In other news, a combined meeting of the Piggott, Greenway and Rector school boards has been called to discuss problems posed by new state mandates, and to discuss future options. The annual Lions Club auction generated $2,300 for their worthy efforts and the Holiday Tour of Homes is set for Dec. 4.
The owners and staff of radio station KTEI held an open house this past Sunday afternoon. The owners, Pagene and George Cook and Joyce and Rex Watson, were hosts for the event. Staff members Robert Layer and Tim Blair were pictured explaining the workings of the studio to Betty Birmingham.
Jim Clements was pictured this week with an eight point buck he harvested near Nubbin Ridge..while Marty Hoggard and Kevin Gurley were photographed with a six point buck that both hunters shot near Calico Rock.
In sports, the Mohawks beat Greenway 95-65 behind Chuck Hope's 29 points..while the junior boys beat the Tigers by one with Brent Hartsfield leading the scoring. The Lady Mohawks also swept the Tigers, and the junior girls posted a win over Westside. Sabrina Tate and Marty Wallis topped the scoring efforts.
Meanwhile, the Corning Bobcats fell to the defending AA state champions from Augusta 7-10 in the second round of the football playoffs.
1988
The Quorum Court was wrestling with finances 20 years ago this week, and facing a possible $72,000 shortfall according to Judge Harry Niewald. Meanwhile, Norman Muse beat Scot Sale 429-377 in the run-off for city alderman.
This year's Lions Club auction raised over $2,500 for their sight-saving projects, and Bryan Allman and Peggy Ruhl were chosen as Mr. and Miss PHS in this year's "Who's Who." PAL's staff and students visited the Piggott police and fire departments recently, and got a tour from Ronny Dixon and Kenneth Parker.
This week's paper also included a feature on the old Star School, which was located northwest of Hitt's Chapel Church. The school was formed in June of 1890, and was consolidated with Piggott in June of 1945 along with Austin, St. Francis, Bell Ann, Walnut Hill and Battle. The property was later sold in 1950, and currently belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Johnson.
This week's paper also included a thank-you note from alderman candidate Eugene Mann that read--"I would like to thank the 653 voters who voted for me. And my wife would like to thank the 839 voters who voted for Jim Poole."
The local Cub Scout pack held a "Raingutter Regatta" Oct. 25, first place went to Bradlee Sanders, second to Sidney Brinkley and third to Neil Holifield.
In sports, David Stender and Jeff Henderson were chosen to the All-District football team from the Mohawks. Honorable mentions went to Nat Finley, Bryan Allman, Chris Day and Tony McNabb. And basketball season is now underway for the Tribe.
