James Gaylon Parrish

James Gaylon Parrish, 83, a native of Clay County, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, in Phoenix, Ariz.

He was born March 5, 1925, in Clay County to the late Roy and Agnes Parrish. He was a graduate of Rector High School and, following graduation, joined the U.S. Navy and served nearly three years.

Afterward he moved to Detroit and joined the police department. He later served an 18-month tour in Korea, and then returned to the Detroit Police Department. Upon his return, he was transferred to the mounted division, where he trained the men and horses of the unit. He also served as a member of the Detroit Police Mounted Drill Team, which is regarded as one of the nation's best.

He and wife, Carolyn, were married in 1949, and the couple had two children, Gayle and Gregory. Following retirement the couple moved to Phoenix.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son Greg Parrish. He is survived by his wife; one brother, Jack Parrish of Piggott; daughter Gayle Hoffman and husband Joel of Anthem, Ariz., and granddaughter Kaitlyn Hoffman.
