Pfc. Jim Metz, son of Audine Lane of Piggott, was seriously injured in a freak accident in Vietnam 40 years ago last week. Metz was injured when two grenades accidently exploded killing three and wounding seven. In other service news, Pfc. Charles Fry of Greenway, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fry, is scheduled to leave for Vietnam Dec. 12. And Piggott Junior High School science teacher Leonard Lancaster, a native of Cape Girardeau, was given a going away party as he prepared to depart for the Army Dec. 2.
The Little Christmas Belle pageant will be Dec. 2, with 20 contestants signed-up so far. Meanwhile, Greenway held homecoming in the past week and crowned Melinda White queen. Her court included--Judy Strand, Teresa Featherston, Regina White and Joan Ward.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the features included "The Graduate," "Frankenstein Created Woman" and "Don't Just Stand There." Patrons were also reminded that the shows were repeated continuously from 2-9 p.m. every Sunday.
In sports, the Mohawks were idle this week as they prepared for the Thanksgiving Day showdown at Corning. Meanwhile, the ASU Indians have accepted an invitation to play the North Dakota State Bison in the Pecan Bowl on Dec. 14 in Arlington, Tex. Quarterback James Hamilton passed for over 1,238 yards this season, while running back Frank McGuigan ran for 1,220. The defense was anchored by future NFL star linebacker Bill Bergey with 200 tackles.
1978
The quorum court approved the 1979 budget back on Nov. 9.Meanwhile the Jaycettes are getting ready for the annual Belle and Beau contest on Dec. 4. In other news, the PHS Beta Club held a Walk-A-Thon for the Arthritis Foundation and 82 people took part. Top money raisers were Joe Mowery, Joe Green and Delbert Green. In a related note, the Beta Club held induction ceremonies Nov. 10 and welcomed 15 new members.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees. The late show feature was "Young Lady Chatterley". Next door at the Rebel Market Twinkie the Kid will be making a visit on Dec. 2, handing out free balloons and Twinkie rings.
In sports, a feature noted that "despite a lack of public support" the Lady Mohawk volleyball team finished second to Walnut Ridge in the district tournament, and qualified for state. The squad traveled to Arkadelphia where they lost to eventual runner-up Westside, beat Monticello and fell to Cabot. Still in its infancy, the future looks bright for Coach Phyllis Morgan and the Lady Mohawk volleyball program.
Also in sports, the Mohawks split with Maynard in the past week with Todd Watson leading the senior boys to victory with 26 points. For the Lady Mohawks, they lost to Maynard twice, and beat Rector and Marmaduke in the past several days. Shelby Renfro and Susan Wallis led the scoring.
And the Greenway boys split with the Lake City Catfish in the past week, as the junior boys lost and the senior boys won.
1983
A story on deregulation involving AT&T was featured 25 years ago this week, although GTE customers wouldn't be affected. It was noted that the break-up of "Ma Bell" would mean GTE would become the largest phone company in the country. In other news, the Holiday Homes Tour is set for Dec. 4 and the Belles and Beaus Pageant will be Dec. 12.
The PHS history class sponsored 50's day on Nov. 22. First place in the dress-up contest went to Marty Wallis, second to Trent Holcomb and third to Lorre Gossett. Meanwhile the twist contest lacked contestants, but a few students did try to "Bunny Hop".
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was Stephen King's "The Dead Zone" while the late show was "Exposed."
In births to announce, Chuck, Sherry and Joe Don Schulte welcomed new arrival Brian Scott Schulte on Nov. 27. He arrived quickly at eight pounds and seven ounces, and had a full head of black hair.
In sports, Travis Cashion and Coy Mauldin were named All-District football selections for 2AA-North in the past week. Honorable mentions went to David Swift and Mark Self.
And the Lady Mohawks posted an improbable 52-44 win over Paragould, despite playing the final 2:17 with just four players. Audrey Hampton, Kim Stewart and Ann Yost all fouled out of the game, leaving Sabrina Tate, Judy Smith, Lori Beaver and Delana Wade to battle the Lady Bulldogs. Tate finished with 23 points, 13 in the pivotal fourth quarter. The junior girls won too, and remain unbeaten.
1988
Christmas Fest was set for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3, in downtown Piggott, and the Jaycee's were sponsoring a toy drive, 20 years ago this week. Meanwhile, Piggott Nursing Center hosted a fashion show and the local Cub Scouts food drive netted over 3,000 items that will be donated to DHS.
Births to announce this week include Melloney Fay Dunlap, a daughter born to Harold and Debbie Dunlap on Nov. 5 at Arkansas Methodist; and Jackie Don Vaughn Jr., a son born to Jackie and Sheila Vaughn of Piggott on Nov. 22..also at Arkansas Methodist in Paragould.
PES has a new "Just Say No" flag, that was presented to Principal Betty Payne by "Just Say No" club president Jamie Harmon. And kindergarten class members learned about Thanksgiving last week by dressing up as Indians and decorating a teepee. Pictured were Samantha Johnson, Heath Haywood and Christi Galloway. And the PHS band has been invited to perform Dec. 21 on the Capitol rotunda in Little Rock. Speaking of the band, Rebecca Scheffler was recognized for selling the most band calendars this year in time.
In sports, the Lady Mohawks split with Clay County Central in basketball in the past week, with the junior girls winning their game and the senior girls dropping theirs. Leading the scoring for the Tribe were Mia Crowson and Kim Henson.
