1968

Juanita Lee was crowned Little Miss Christmas Belle 1968, 40 years ago this past week. First alternate was Beth Hardcastle and second was Jania Whitehorn. Meanwhile, Piggott State Bank president T. W. Leggett has announced that three employees have been promoted to assistant cashier, including--Paula Gossett, Jimmy Poole and Evanell Beaver.

In other news, the Ralph Wright family was pictured at a Thanksgiving day family reunion..marking the first time the entire family had been together since 1954. And at the Carolyn Theater this week the features included "Five Card Stud", "Angels from Hell" and "For Love of Ivy."

In sports, the Mohawks fell to the Corning Bobcats 0-33 before a crowd of 3,000 on Thanksgiving Day. The Tribe ends their season at 10-2, and have a record of 28-6 over the course of the past three years. Link Fuller was selected outstanding lineman in District AA, and All-District selections included Eddie Winberry, Teddy Bellers and Steve Rogers. For Winberry it marked his third year as a letterman, while Bellers and Rogers are two year lettermen.

Also in sports, Coach Malcolm Murphy has announced the Mohawk basketball schedule for the coming year, and the season will get underway Dec. 5 as the Tribe visits the Rector Black Cats.

1978

Vaval Eskew of Piggott was critically injured 30 years ago last week, after a metal pole he was using to harvest pecans came into contact with a power line near his home. Employees and customers of Piggott Tractor responded to the scene, including Mike Cook, Bob Shanklin and Don Kirklin, but were unable to assist Eskew until the power could be turned off.

As Cook and Shanklin returned to Piggott Tractor they were summoned to James Elevator to assist three workers that had been overcome by chemical fumes in an elevator pit. The three men, Ronnie Courtroul, David Goodman and Don Broadway, would recover fully; but Eskew lost both arms in his accident.

Christmas Belle and Beau for 1978 were Michelle Smart and Chris Morris, and in births to announce a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith on Nov. 26. Heather Dianne Smith was born at St. Bernard's in Jonesboro.

This week's paper also included a group photo of the final eighth grade class from the old Austin School, taken in May of 1953. The group included--Gail Neely, Shirley Wright, Alma Latimer, Barbara Perminter, Wilma Foster, Eva Nell Beaver, Lola Faye Foster and James Lee Magee. The teacher was Lillie Parrish.

In sports, the Mohawks fell at Highland..despite holding Rebel star Jay Hanson to just 23 points, while the Lady Mohawks swept Paragould. And a total of 46 deer were killed in Clay County during the recent deer season..35 bucks and 11 doe.

1983

The second in a series of meetings between the Piggott, Greenway and Rector school boards was scheduled 25 years ago this week..as the districts look to contend with new state mandates and how to fund those changes. Meanwhile, two Missouri women have been sentenced to prison in connection with the death of a Qulin man whose body was found north of Pollard.

The annual Christmas parade was postponed 25 years ago this week, and had to be backed up 24 hours due to a torrential downpour. Meanwhile, basketball homecoming will be Dec. 16 and the DJ for the dance will be Groovey Grover. And the recent Lions Club auction has been termed a big success.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Beyond the Limit" while the late show was "Platos." Meanwhile, PHS band members singled out for outstanding performances at regional competition included--Kevin Rouse, Kelly Potts, Renae Duckworth, Terri Green and Frankie Rester.

In sports, the Mohawks got 18 points from Dane Coomer as they beat the Hoxie Mustangs, though the junior boys lost their game. Meanwhile, the Lady Mohawks fell to Cave City, Highland and Walnut Ridge and the junior girls dropped their first game of the season in the past week. Meanwhile, the Greenway Tigers lost to Monettee and Tyronza..while the Lady Tigers dropped a game to Stanford and then beat Marmaduke.

1988

The city's ambitious plan to build a new four-field baseball and softball complex was reviewed 20 years ago this week. The 10 acre site will cost $100,000 to develop and will eventually be Independence Park. In other news, the community Christmas celebration was a big success. The city council approved the hiring of Royce Lavon Midkiff of Greenway as a new police office..and Chief Kenny Parker was pictured in front of city hall with the department's new police car. The 1987 Ford was bought from the Missouri Highway Patrol for $7,900.

Work continues on the new bridge on U.S. 62 over Sugar Creek (just west of Country Club Road) and winners in the VFW Voice of Democracy essay contest at PHS this year were--first place Chris Bellers, second place Crystal Burns and third place Gary Swift.

A report on economic indicators and economic growth showed that Clay County was tied with Poinsett for 38th in growth in 1986. The county's population of 19,400 was 36th out of 75 counties, though Clay was in the top ten for residents lost over the course of the past ten years. The 1986 per capita income in Clay County was $9,257, which ranked 51st in the state. The state average income was $$11042, which was well below the national average of $14,639.

In sports, the Mohawks swept Crowleys Ridge Academy and fell to Hoxie in the past week, up next will be the Cougars of Clay County Central. Meanwhile the Lady Mohawks were swept by both Highland and Walnut Ridge.
