Leona Shride

Iva Leona Dunn Shride, 88, recently of Piggott, died Nov. 30, 2008, in Anaheim, Calif.

Born Oct. 10, 1920, she was a member of the Church of God in St. Louis, Mo., Portland, Ore., Bell Gardens, Calif., Madison, Wis., and Piggott. She was married to Clifton Carl Shride at the age of 17 and would have been married 70 years this year.

She is survived by three daughters and their spouses, Iva Mignon Soto and husband Richard of La Habra, Calif., Glenys Yvonne Arnell and husband Jerry of Stockton, Calif., and Mitzi Belle Manning of husband Tom of Anaheim, Calif.; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Shride and her husband taught in a one room school in Patterson, Ark., with Mrs. Shride teaching kindergarten through fourth grade and her husband teaching fifth through eighth grade.

During World War II, she traveled in the United States with Clifton while he was stationed in the states and then lived with her parents in Oklahoma when he was sent to the Philippines at the end of 1943. When Clifton came home from the war, he moved his family to St. Louis. Leona worked as a homemaker, raising her family of three girls.

Leona was active in the Church of God missionary society. She loved sewing, quilting and music. While living in Piggott, after Clifton's retirement, she was a prominent member of the Piggott Hospital Auxiliary.

A memorial service was held Friday, Dec. 5, in Buena Park, Calif., at Renaker/Klockgether Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 13, at First Church of God in Piggott. Burial will be in the Piggott Cemetery.
