Recently I read one that sticks in my mind.
It reads, "Look through the windshield, not through the rearview mirror."
That seems fitting in the new year.
Instead of looking back we need to look forward.
Some of us need new beginnings. We need to forget the disappointments of the past.
We can dwell on unhappy endings, sad outcomes, and injustice until it colors the future.
No, it isn't always easy to erase bad memories or to bury them. But sometimes it's necessary before we can take a step forward..
Sometimes we get bogged down in life's problems, just stuck in the mud, wallowing there.
Or, like Lot's wife, we look back, resisting the path before us.
We can't change the past, much as we would like to sometimes. We can't control what has already happened.
Wishing won't change anything; the past can't be altered,
We can't go back; we can only press forward. Unless we do, we're stuck in the pause mode, making no progress
We have to get up, dust ourselves off, then move ahead.
What am I rambling about?
I'm talking about past mistakes, grudges, resentment, unchangeable events, lost dreams.
I'm talking about moving, cleaning the slate, writing a new chapter.
Maybe we need specific goals for 2009, not vague pledges. Maybe we need one goal, not a bunch we can't keep.
Instead of vowing to lose weight, qualify that by setting a goal of 20 pounds and a plan to get there.
If you decide to quit smoking, set a date for that accomplishment.
Set up a filing system, that is easy to manage A junk drawer with a hodge podge of bills, receipts, papers isn't good enough.
Set a goal that you can meet. Disappointments will come if you set an unrealistic goal. Write it down and tell someone. That will motivate you to keep your promise to yourself and will promote accountability.
Decide to budget your finances, to reduce your debts. Some people have no idea how much they spend, or waste, because they don't keep detailed records. An accurate record can pinpoint those areas that need adjusting.
Laugh more in 2009. That will make you and those around you happier.
This week I was in the company of a couple who look on the bright side of life. They both had hearty laughter about the most senseless thing. I found myself laughing right along with them, and I had a good time.
Maybe we need to lighten up, to enjoy life more this year. Life is serious, but enjoy those light moments.
One last thought. Think long term, not one day.
Persevere and keep your eye on the prize.
