Qualifying for the county bee this year were fourth grader Chirsten Pace, sixth grader Jessica Mallard and eighth grader Beau Wicker. This year's alternate is fifth grader Anna McMillon.
Keeping with local tradition, the four were recognized last week as Piggott State Bank president and CEO Paula O. Blackwell presented prize money to the students.
Along with the qualifiers and alternate, those taking part in this year's spelling bee included Chirien Pace, Colby Crossfield, Brooke Pattillo, Ashlyn Moody, Andrew Allen, Danielle Steagal, Trey Provance, Tristan Lowrie, Hunter Massey, Megan Johnson, Mariah Richardson, Haley Trosper, Kasey Crossfield, Katelynn Woodard, Callie Watson-Smith, Quinton Mauldin, Chris Book, Breanna Canter, Joseph Burdin, Jordan Stallings and James Maynard.
PHS eighth grader Allison Gurley qualified as a participant last year, won the county bee and made a good showing at the state spelling bee in Little Rock.
