Humane Society seeking support for improved facility

Thursday, January 15, 2009
The Clay County Humane Society is trying to take an important step forward in the organization's goal to find homes for area dogs. These measures include signing a lease agreement with the City of Rector granting the Humane Society the use of land near the city shop. The group's initial plans were to build a new facility at the site, featuring several kennels for dogs and cats, as well as office and treatment spaces.

However, due to the restructuring of available grant funds, the Humane Society has been forced to scale back immediate plans. The current goal is to add another eight dog kennels, similar to the one currently in use by Rector animal control.

"Right now, a smaller facility is just more feasible," Clay County Humane Society president Rebecca Ascolese said. "We still hope to build a larger indoor facility, but with the current grant situation, the smaller outdoor facility is the best place to start."

To get the ball rolling on the project, the Humane Society is requesting the assistance of all persons and groups interested in making a difference in curtailing the county's stray population. The organization is seeking donations in the form of fencing, posts, concrete, dog food, metal self feeders, metal water dishes and large dog houses. Additional volunteers to help with construction of the kennel and animal care, as well as monetary donations, also are being sought.

"Any kind of support we receive will be appreciated," Ascolese said.

Those who wish to offer their assistance may contact the Clay County Humane Society at (870) 598-1040 or the Rector Water Department at 595-3035.

The Humane Society currently is offering a limited time special adoption plan for those who wish to provide a loving home to one of the dogs currently in the Rector kennel. As part of the program, there will be no adoption fees for the cost of spaying and neutering the dogs currently available.

"This is a great opportunity for someone who's looking to adopt a dog," Ascolese said.

The organization currently has four dogs available for adoption. These include male and female possible Husky mix puppies of about four to five months in age; a one-year-old smaller female Shepherd mix and a two-year-old Jack Russell Terrier.

"These dogs are all good-tempered and affectionate," Ascolese said. "They would make wonderful pets."

Those considering adoption are encouraged to contact the Humane Society or the Rector Water Department.
