Mohawks split pair

Thursday, January 22, 2009
The Piggott Mohawks split a pair of conference games in the past week, losing at Corning on Tuesday night and then posting a road win at Manila Friday. Tuesday they were scheduled to visit the Rivercrest Colts.

Mohawks at Corning

Coming off a physical win over Brookland at PHS last Monday, the Tribe traveled to Corning the following evening for a conference tilt. Although only four Bobcats got into the scoring column on the night the home team easily handled the Mohawks by a final score of 38-60.

Leading the way for the Mohawks was the always-steady Rob Rice with 17 points, while Zack Brown paced the home squad with 20 points in the win.

With the loss the Mohawks fell to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in 3A-3 conference play, while the Bobcats improved to 14-2 overall and 8-1 in conference.

Mohawks at Manila

The Tribe traveled to Manila last Friday night and brought home a conference win over the Lions by a final of 55-52. With the victory the Tribe also climbed above the .500 mark in 3A-3 play.

The first quarter of last week's game at Manila was a tight one, and the two teams were knotted at 18-18 as the second period got underway. But in the second frame the Mohawks outscored their hosts 14-10 and took a 32-28 lead in the locker room at the half.

In the third quarter the two teams traded baskets, and each put ten more points on the board to make it a 42-38 Piggott lead entering the final frame. Down the stretch the Mohawks held their ground as they recorded the three-point road win.

Rice once again led the Mohawk offensive assault with 19 points, Sam Yates was also in double figures with 12 points along with Daniel Baldwin win 10. The Lions were paced by J.J. Helton with 15 points in the loss.

With the win the Mohawks move to 7-8 on the season, and 5-4 in conference play, while the Lions fell to 2-11 overall and 2-8 in the 3A-3.

The Tribe was scheduled to visit the Rivercrest Colts Tuesday evening, and will join the Lady Mohawks in hosting the Earle Bulldogs for a four-game-set this Thursday evening, Jan. 22, at PHS. The Mohawks were also planning to make-up the game that was postponed earlier in the year against Hoxie this Saturday evening at PHS, with the junior game set to begin at 5 p.m. Next Tuesday the Mohawks will visit Harrisburg.
