"The kids just did an awesome job," Coach Josh Robins commented by phone on the return trip, "and we were able to win the battle on the offensive boards…we got a lot of rebounds tonight."
The Mohawks got off to a good start on the night, and were up by a score of 14-10 at the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead to five by the halftime break, and led 31-26. Entering the fourth quarter the Tribe led 47-38, and they held on down the stretch thanks to timely free-throw shooting for the five point win.
"We stayed out of foul trouble, Daniel (Baldwin) got into a little foul trouble but he plays smart and worked on through it," Robins added.
Of Rice's 23 points on the night about half came at the free-throw line as he converted on 11 of 13 attempts, and as a team the Mohawks were 20 of 30 on the game. Along with Rice's 23 and Grubb's 21 the Tribe got nine points each from Daniel Baldwin and Sam Yates while Jonathan Wright finished with six. Baldwin also made several big free throws down the stretch according to Robins, and was five of seven in the fourth quarter from the charity stripe. Leading the way for the Colts in the loss was Demoine Brown with 22 points.
With the win the Mohawks extend their season record to 8-8, but more importantly their conference record to 6-4. They'll be back in action Thursday night as part of a four game afternoon-evening set at Piggott High School as the boys and girls teams host the Earle Bulldogs.
