Rector Mayor comments on devastating storm

Friday, January 30, 2009
Rector Mayor Ron Kemp issued this statement late Tuesday afternoon concerning the ice storm that has hit the community:

This is a devastating storm for our community and the surrounding area. Preliminary surveys indicate this is considerably worse than storm of 2002.

The first thing I want to emphasize is public safety. It is dangerous out there with the icy streets, downed power lines and falling trees. Please be extremely cautious with anything you do on your property or as you move throughout the community.

The Rector Community Center is available for anyone who wants temporary shelter. The building has electricity through an emergency generator system and food may be prepared there. Residents will need to provide their own sleeping materials if they want to stay overnight. The community center staff, the police department and the city crew are available to help anyone who wants to use the shelter. Please stop by city hall or telephone 595-2423 for assistance on this or any other storm-related issues.

At this point, we do not know when Entergy crews will be able to restore power, but they are doing all they can in a very difficult situation. As everyone can see, the damage is overwhelming and patience will be needed by us all as they work to provide electricity.

We are extremely pleased that the city has been able to put into place the emergency generator system that provides power to the community center, city hall and our water and sewer facilities. Without these generators, our communications and response system would be severely hampered and we would not be able to provide water and sewer services to our residents.

City crews are continuing to work to clear streets and they also are being cautious in this dangerous situation. We will strive to get the city back into a normal situation as quickly and safely as possible.

Recovering from this storm will be a major undertaking and the city will make every effort to serve the needs of all residents -- let us know how we can be helpful. City officials also will be in close contact with state and federal agencies to secure the assistance that we know will be forthcoming following a disaster of this nature.

This is so sad to see our lovely tree's in Rector so damaged. I have said so many times one of the things I miss most about living down here in Fl. is the beautiful tree's in my home town and the Labor Day park is kept up so niceI hope everyone will come out of this o.k. God Bless Clay Co.

I was in Kennett tonight, and a stranger stopped me to ask about a laundry mat. Thinking he was local, we told him up the street. But he was from Fl. and had a crew of 40 electric linemen sent here to help. Can we not open our homes, or even the laundry mats be able to profide free use of washers and dryers for them. I, for one would be willing to let a service man/woman in my home to help them out with laundry after all they have done for us. I think we owe them for a change.
