"It kind of shocked me at first," Allen said. "I told them I'd talk to Melanie and we'd think about it."
"I said 'Oh, let's go for it!'" Melanie said. "It's probably the most expensive present he's ever gotten for me."
While the decision may seem spur-of-the-moment to many, the thought of owning their own business is one the couple shared for quite some time.
"I've always wanted to own my own business," Melanie said. "The timing was just right. It all worked out perfectly."
Fast-forward to February and the couple now has opened the doors of the new Rector Flowers for their customers. The store's first day of business was Monday. Once inside, visitors are greeted by not only an assortment of lovely flower arrangements and gifts, but also an interior design which features walls painted in bright, spring colors.
"We repainted everything," Melanie said. "We wanted it to be colorful for our customers. We want everyone to come in and feel welcome."
Not only were the Haywoods going for a different look for their shop, they also wanted to offer more items. The store features live plants and flowers of numerous varieties, balloons, greeting cards, assorted gift bags, purses, jewelry and home décor.
Normal business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Special orders can be taken after hours by calling 595-9066. During business hours, customers may call the store at 595-2135.
Many in town are familiar with the Haywoods through their work in other positions in the community. Melanie previously worked as the receptionist at the Rector Medical Clinic, while Allen is an officer with the Rector Police Department.
"We're pretty familiar with most of the people here in town," Allen said. "If not, then we both always enjoy meeting new people."
The store will hold an official grand opening all day Thursday. Everyone is invited to go by for a visit and enjoy refreshments while taking a look around at what all the shop has to offer.
"We're excited about opening," Melanie said. "It really is a dream come true."
