The Piggott Lady Mohawks closed out the regular season last week, losing a 31-48 decision at Harrisburg on Tuesday, then dropping a 39-77 loss to the Hoxie Lady Mustangs last Thursday night. Monday night the Tribe took on the Hoxie squad again in the first round of the district tournament at Tuckerman, and despite a good showing fell by a final of 59-71.

Coming off the embarrassing loss at Hoxie the Lady Mohawks could have easily phoned-in their first round game Monday night, but the Tribe rose to the occasion and gave the Mustangs all they could handle. Pacing the way was senior Hillary French with 23 points, with most of her scoring coming on seven three-pointers.

As the contest got underway the Mustangs hit several big three-point-baskets as they ran out to a 22-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. But in the second frame the Lady Mohawks outscored Hoxie 20-13 as they pulled to within six points by the halftime break, 29-35.

In the second half the Lady Mohawks made several runs on the Mustangs, and a number of times cut the lead to just four or five; but Hoxie made their free-throws down the stretch as they held on to advance.

Along with French's 23 points, the Mohawks got 14 from junior Michelle Greaney, six points each from Kenna Dennis and Penny McCluskey and four points each from Taylor Coomer and Janna Corter. As a team the Tribe shot a dismal five for 11 from the free-throw line. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Tanya Sisco with 25 on the game.

As the season concludes the Mohawks, and coaches Natalie Stricklin and Alan Rabjohn, bid farewell to seniors Kaitlyn Morgan, Hillary French and Kenna Dennis. On the bright side, the Tribe will return several players with game experience, and will move up a number of good prospects from the junior high squad.
