He had a Master's Degree in chemistry and taught high school science for 30 years in the Piggott, Clarkton and Twin Rivers school districts. He was a member of the St. Francis Baptist Church, where he proudly served as a deacon for over 30 years.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald Hughes, and three older brothers who died as infants.
He leaves behind his wife, Joann Hughes; daughter, Carol Gilley; grandson, Austin Gilley; one brother, Willard Hughes and wife Barbara, all of Piggott; three sisters, Lenora Dalton and husband Kenneth of Michigan, Elaine Mobley of Piggott and June Rodery and husband Wesley of Michigan; two step-sons, Steve Stockton and Michael Salyards; a step-grandson, Mikey Salyards, 13 nieces and six nephews and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 16, at the St. Francis Baptist Church with Dr. Don Houston officiating. Burial was in the Williams Cemetery.
Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of arrangements.
