Spelling held at PES

Participants in the 2009 Clay County Spelling Bee were, from left: Front --- Lauren Hovis of Corning, Kaitlyn Essman of Rector, Chirsten Pace of Piggott and Jessica Mallard of Piggott. Back --- Chase Weller of Corning, Hayden McCluskey of Rector, Victoria Yielding of Corning, Beau Wicker of Piggott and Mitchell Weber of Rector. The event was won by Chirsten Pace, who will compete Saturday in the state competition at UALR in Little Rock.
Piggott Elementery School hosted the 2009 Clay County Spelling Bee Wednesday, Feb. 18, with participants from throughout the county taking part. At the conclusion of competition the winner was PES fourth grader Chirsten Pace.

Based on her local win, Pace is now scheduled to take part in the state competition this Saturday on the campus of UALR in Little Rock.

Also taking part from Piggott were Jessica Mallard and Beau Wicker, while the remainder of the contestants were--Lauren Hovis, Chase Weller and Victoria Yielding of Corning and Kaitlyn Essman, Hayden McCluskey and Mitchell Weber of Rector.

This marks the second year in a row that a Piggott student has won the county spelling bee, as last year's winner was eighth grader Allison Gurley.
