Softball season at hand

The Piggott Lady Mohawk softball team will begin the 2009 season at home next Monday, March 9, as they play host to the Lady Bulldogs of Tuckerman. The following day the Tribe will host Corning for a doubleheader, and on Thursday, March 12, the Lady Lions of Manila will visit Independence Park.

The Lady Mohawks will go on the road for the first time this year Monday, March 16, as they visit Hoxie. The following Monday, March 23, they'll visit Marmaduke, and that Thursday, March 26, the Lady Greyhounds make the trip to Piggott for a non-conference game.

On Monday, March 30, the Mohawks will travel to Rivercrest, and that Thursday, April 2, they'll host the Lady Hornets of Harrisburg.

The Lady Mustangs of Hoxie will visit Piggott Monday, April 6, and the next day the Tribe will make the trip to Brookland for a game with the Bearcats. The Mohawks will wrap up the regular season Tuesday, April 14 as they visit Tuckerman.

This year's 3A-3 district softball tournament will be held April 18-21 at Harrisburg, and the regional tournament will be held the following week at Tuckerman.

With the exception of the March 16 game at Hoxie, and the April 2 home game against Harrisburg, all the contests will start at 4 p.m. Those two games are scheduled to get underway at 4:30.

Coaches Nikki Speer and Melissa Williams have a good number of players out for this year's team, with a lot of young talent, as they look to compete in what has become a very competitive district.
