Both teams put the ball in play often throughout the first seven innings of the game, with the lead changing hands four times. "They'd take the lead and get all fired-up, then we'd come back and take the lead and they'd get down," Hearn observed, "our kids never let up when they were behind, and I think that was what decided the game in the end..we stayed positive."
Finally the Mohawks were able to pull out to a three-run lead in the top of the eighth inning, and Mohawk right-hander Tyler Grubb shut-out the Hornets in the home half of the frame.
Jake Poe led the Mohawk offensive attack with three RBI as he went 3 for 3 on the game; Colby Lovelace also drove in three runs, while Tanner Murray was 2 for 4, Alek Samples went 2 for 5 with a run batted in and Hayden McMillon was also credited with an RBI. Lovelace pitched the first six innings for the Tribe, with senior Grubb working the last two frames.
The Mohawks were scheduled to make-up a conference game with Corning Tuesday afternoon, but that contest was doubtful due to the wet field conditions. The Tribe is scheduled to take on the Gosnell Pirates at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the "Duel on the Diamond" at Paragould. With a win they will play again at 9 a.m. Saturday morning, if they move into the loser's bracket they'll be playing at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Next week the Tribe is scheduled to host Brookland on Monday, visit Tuckerman Tuesday and host the Corning Bobcats on Thursday.
