Piggott vs Corning
The Tribe hosted the Corning Bobcats last Tuesday evening and shut-out the visitors 4-0 with senior Tyler Grubb notching the win. Grubb struck out six on the game, and gave up just one base on balls, as he recorded the conference shut-out.
The young bats of Coach Shawn Hearn did the talking for the Mohawks, as Jake Poe and Colby Lovelace each had two hits and one RBI, while Spencer Coomer, Daniel Cheshire, Tanner Murray, Hayden McMillon and Alek Samples all recorded hits in the victory.
Piggott vs Gosnell
The Mohawks took on the 4A Gosnell Pirates for the second time this year Saturday in the first round of the Duel on the Diamond at Paragould. Earlier in the season the Tribe had dropped a 12-2 loss to the talented Pirates, but Saturday the young Mohawks hung with the Gosnell squad throughout. But with the tying run at second Lovelace flied out and the Pirates held on to record a 4-2 win.
Grubb worked all five innings of the contest, and in the words of Coach Hearn, "did a phenomenal job." Leading the way at the plate was Lovelace with a 2 for 3 day, including a two run homerun in the first inning. Coomer also hit the ball well, and played a good game in the field, according to Hearn.
"We really looked sharp, and we weren't the same team they beat earlier in the season," Hearn noted later, "it was some of the best defense we've played all year and it carried over into the Brookland game."
Piggott vs Brookland
The Mohawks hosted the Brookland Bearcats Monday afternoon and beat the visitors 12-2 on a cold and wind-swept day. Samples got the nod, and gave up only three hits in getting the five inning victory while walking just three of the Brookland batters. Samples, along with Kyle Wright, led the way at the plate in the win as they both went 3 for 3 on the game. Along the way Wright drove in two runs, while Samples drove in one with an RBI double.
In fact, every member of the Piggott team got a hit during the lopsided conference win according to Coach Hearn.
With the wins the Mohawks extended their season record to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in 3A-3 conference play with two games left on the schedule. The Tribe was scheduled to visit Tuckerman Tuesday afternoon and will travel to Corning Thursday for the season finale. The two final games, and the other district contests this week, will decide the seeding for the upcoming district tournament at Piggott April 17-19.
