Fundraiser underway

Thursday, May 7, 2009
The Clay County Genealogical and Historical Society now is conducting a fundraiser to place a granite marker on the court square to honor the first elected county officials of Clayton County, which later became known as Clay County.

Society members plan to inscribe all the elected officials of 1873-74 on the marker. To raise money for the project, they are selling copies of the Clay County 1920 Federal Census.

The census lists everyone living in Clay County in 1920 and includes all family member names, age, sex, birth places and place of employment. The census books previously were sold for $30 but are being offered for just $10 as part of the fundraising effort.

The books are on sale at the Piggott Library, Piggott Chamber of Commerce office in the depot building and at Sugar Creek Antiques/Sugar Creek Kids on the square.

Checks should be made payable to the Clay County Genealogical and Historical Society.

Society members also note that donations to the marker also will be accepted. Those who want more information may contact Larry or Carol Holifield at 598-1019.

Refrain from obscenity in your comments, and to keep discussions civil, don't say anything in a way your grandmother would be ashamed to read.

Also, The Dragonfly Antiques and Gift Shop has sold many copies of the book and has more to provide to those interested. The owner of the Dragonfly is donating the white wrought iron fencing that was on the original court house square, to the Geneological and Historical Society to define the space where the marker will be placed.
