Respected teacher retires

Thursday, May 14, 2009
The Rector School District soon will bid farewell to one of the school's most popular teachers. Superintendent Rob Louder read to the school board Monday night a letter from German and social studies teacher Rebecca Simmons announcing her retirement.

Board members accepted her letter and voiced their appreciation of Simmons and the quality of work she has given the district and its students.

"You can't replace a teacher like her," Louder said. "She's done an outstanding job. Everyone at this school is going to miss her. We all wish her the best."

The board also accepted the resignation of high school English teacher Sonya Edington, who is taking a position elsewhere.

Keena Graham was hired as a new elementary teacher. At this time, no final decision has been made as to which grade she will teach.

In other business, the board:

* Approved the calendar for the 2009-10 school year. Classes will begin Aug. 19 and end May 28.

* Heard from Louder regarding preparation for graduation at 8 p.m. Friday in the gymnasium.

* Approved the financial report for April.

* Approved the minutes from the April meeting.
