Remembering those who served

A stately American flag graces the headstone of a grave in Woodland Heights cemetery outside Rector while the cemetery's larger, central flag flows in the breeze on a hill in the distance.
Those who have served their country in the armed forces were remembered during Memorial Day weekend, even though Rector's annual memorial service Sunday was canceled due to heavy rain. Small flags at Woodland Heights Cemetery mark the graves of hundreds of veterans, such as Les McKeel, who served as a Master Sergeant in the Army during World War II. Placed by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary, the flags express appreciation for sacrifice and love of country which helped preserve America's freedoms.
