He was a graduate of Piggott High School, and the Memphis Technician's School. At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the South Pacific during World War II. After returning to the United States he married Betty Lou Jacobs. To this union on son was born, Thomas William. He later married Patricia Joan Etter and to this union four children were born, Sally Loraine Kupres, Michael Don "Donnie" Hitt, Catherine Sue "Cathy" Lessard and Daniel Marie "Dani" Gorman. She preceded him in death in October of 1979. In 1988 he married Norma J. Deacon.
Prior to his retirement from Sears, he worked for the Atomic Energy Commission on Enewetok Island, Greyhound Bus Company and Highland Park Hospital. After his retirement he worked part time for Sam's Club.
He was a member of the Libertyville Masonic Lodge #492 and the Libertyville Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #438. He enjoyed fishing, watching the Cubs and all Razorback sports.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; his sons, Tom and wife Linda of Fayetteville, Don and wife Mary of Hurley, Wis.; his daughters, Sally of Salem, Wis., Cathy and husband Greg of Kenosha, Wis. and Dani of McCollum, Ill.; grandchildren, Meredith Berry and husband Craig, Andrea Sullivan and husband Thomas, Sarah and Kory Kupres, Maija, Michelle and Michel Hitt, Jennifer and Chassie Kruse and Melissa DuBois. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Brennen Kruse, Piper Sullivan and a great-grandson that is due June 12.
A funeral service was held April 20 in Libertyville, Illinois.
