Business, civic leader Jim Winton dead at 75

Longtime Piggott businessman and former city official James "Jim" Winton died Friday, June 5, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was 75.

Winton owned Clay County Abstract from 1962 until 2000. He went into the business with his father, Ray Winton, and remained active in the land title business until his death. He served in various leadership roles in the Arkansas Land Title Association, serving as president before he retired. He had the distinction of being part of the only father and son to serve in that capacity. He also was elected Arkansas Titleman of the Year.

Winton served as secretary/treasurer of the Piggott City Council and bookkeeper for the City of Piggott for 10 years. He was a member of the Piggott Jaycees and the Piggott Chamber of Commerce. He served 16 years in the Piggott National Guard, where he advanced to the rank of Captain. Golf was a favorite pastime.
