Sonnets by Maynard Lee Sisler

Fathers

Fathers know where to locate a band-aid

Whenever puppy-love may hit the skids.

They also know how to handle their kids

When their best efforts are not making the grade

They know how to win -- and suffer their losses

They've learned how to get along with their bosses

They'll teach you how to be a gentle man

And treat your ladies kindly as you can

Space available in a Promised Land

With long life are ours for honoring them.

Granted in the heavenly Father's hand

They may be humble -- or a living gem.

This Sunday in June we'll all meet together

And show how we love our wonderful father.

Good Old Dad

Five dollars a day were good wages then

When father headed up our family.

Bone-tired at day's end, he'd just make it home

In time to hit his great old rocker when

Brother Ben or sweet sister Amy Lee

Would rock the house from cellar to the dome

With music they'd tell him was the latest "swing."

And I vow he'd help them try to learn to sing.

Great at fixing things like bikes and roller skates

He'd rather coach us kids at sandlot baseball

Or take us fishing at fresh water lakes,

Forgetting fatigue, we knew he loved us all

Best part of our lives was to know our dad

The best that anyone could ever had.
