"From the veranda of the Pfeiffer house, where Patrick and Gregory played, Pauline glanced around the tree-covered lawn."

So begins the June 2009 Hemingway-Pfeiffer Creative Writing Retreat anthology, Outside the Lines, penned June 8-12 at the Hemingway Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott.

A total of 18 talented authors came together to pursue their literary interests at the retreat, with some of the participants choosing to write in the barn-studio once used by Ernest Hemingway when visiting his second wife Pauline's family for extended periods.

Dr. Robert Lamm of Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, was the lead mentor for the group. He was assisted by Deanna Dismukes, the museum's education coordinator.

The authors included: John Achor of Hot Springs Village, Rita Dortch of Rector, Sandra Harrison of Fisk, Mo., Bob and Wanda Jones of North Little Rock, Eileen Krause of Cabot, Pat Laster of Benton, Mary Lester of Little Rock, Freeda Baker Nichols of Clinton, Phyllis Rhodes of Everton, Mo., along with Heather Seegraves, Ethel Mohler, Monica Moore, Jennifer Vernon, Lisa Woolery, Ethan Baker and Linda Wyss, all of Piggott.

The group and organizers extended their thanks to Arkansas State University, The Matilda and Karl Pfeiffer Museum and Study Center, D&G Heating and Plumbing, Bob and Wanda Jones and Pat Laster for their donations to the retreat. It was also noted that all 18 of the participants had attended previous retreats in Piggott.

The next Writers' retreats for adults will be held Nov. 2-6, with Roland Mann, Oxford, Miss., as lead mentor.
