Land of Peace

Wednesday, July 15, 2009
Two wars, with casualty lists coming in every day from Afghanistan and Iraq. The solutions for these conflicts seem far off and a little too complex for the average Joe to understand, this writer included. More troops? A surge here and enduring diplomatic efforts over yonder? Sure.

Are these concentrations of events forming a status quo that might ignite a wider war? A shaky non-conflict period of status quo seems possible, with just as many overtones of anxiety bringing about the biblical prophesy of "men's hearts failing them for fear."

Turn around twice and look at all the neighbors of the two principal states --- any sign of peace and quiet? Let us count the ways by naming names of those also guilty of continuing unrest out there and farther beyond those horizons as well.

Iran, Pakistan and India --- traditional belligerents, each possessing the nuclear bomb. Israel, in conflict with Palestine which is not firmly a state as yet.

A little closer to our part of the world lies Myanmar, then directly east to China, 'cross the bay. Tibet and North Korea all making noises reflecting from each a differing sense of turmoil.

All of these contribute to a chronic state of insecurity and the disquieting feeling of collapse and catastrophe in too many countries on a daily basis. Are we any better off here in the USA --- specifically Northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri, where our readers live and thrive? Please read on and enjoy the comfort I may share with you.

They call our part of the country the "Bible Belt" --- a term that doesn't quite stop being scornful. But it also connotes that enough people do read and comply with the Word of God Who sent us His son to bring peace and stamp out death and dying. His masterful advice told us to love God, and love our neighbors as ourselves. We keep the peace "that passes all understanding" by heeding and living our lives in complying with our Lord's commands. Humankind will continue to prevail over these addicted to fighting and strife. Let us be contended with our station in life and one will also know the quiet wonder and the comfort of knowing that all is well.
