Fire destroyed a Rector landmark Saturday evening, as the historic lumber shed at the corner of South Main and West Fifth Streets burned. The fire that claimed the 80-plus year old structure is also expected to go down in history as one of the city's largest. The building now houses the Rector Pallet Co., which is owned and operated by Charles Davis of Greenway. Fire personnel from Rector, Piggott, Kennett, Greenway, Marmaduke and the Northeast Greene Fire District worked together in battling the blaze. Quick action by the firefighters is also credited with saving a large portion of the rear part of the building, where the bulk of the pallet company does its business.
