The 79th annual Greenway picnic, to benefit the Mitchell Cemetery, will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, in that community. The annual event will officially kick off at 9 a.m. with the opening ceremonies on the grandstand, and activities will be going on throughout the day.

Following the opening ceremonies, the first of the day's pageants will get underway at 9:30 a.m. with the Baby Greenway contest for boys and girls ages birth through 12 months. The entry fee is $20. Registration will get underway at 9 a.m. prior to the event. Those who want more information may contact Sandy Hill at 870 529-3325.

The kitchen will open at 11 a.m., and this year barbecue chicken will be served in addition to a variety of other food items. Serving will continue in the air-conditioned dining room until the chicken has been sold out.

Also scheduled for 11 a.m. is the toddler contest for boys and girls ages one through three. Informal attire will be featured. The entry fee is $20 and registration will begin at 10 a.m. that day. Those who want more information on that contest may contact Della Jackson at 870 598-2136.

At 2 p.m. the Little Miss Greenway pageant for little girls ages four through eight will be held. Contestants should wear Sunday dress. The entry fee is $20 and registration will begin at 1 p.m. prior to the contest.

The afternoon also will include the Junior Miss Greenway pageant at 4 p.m. for girls ages 9 to 12. The attire will be Sunday dress. The entry fee is $20 and is due prior to the event.

At 5:30 p.m. the annual auction of donated items will be conducted, with Gary Magee and Kevin Latimer serving as the auctioneers.

At 8 p.m. the highlight of the evening, the Miss Greenway pageant, will be held on the stage. This pageant will include young ladies ages 13 to 18 and contestants will wear formal wear. The entry fee is $20 and pre-registration is required. Those who want more information or wish to pre-register may contact Barbara Collier at 870 598-7311.

Following the Miss Greenway pageant, around 10 p.m., the annual drawings will be held for cash and other prizes.

Five generations of my family are buried in Mitchell Cemetery, and I would like to thank Gerald Burdin for the great job he has done in the upkeep of the cemetery grounds.
