Sevada Erbadell Smart

Wednesday, August 5, 2009
Sevada Erbadell Smart, affectionately known as "Erbie," was born February 12, 1926, to Frank Adams and Jewell Lee (Speer) Adams. Her father lost his life in a train wreck when she was a small child, and Edmond Carroll Poole became her dad and raised her as his own child when he married Jewell. Both parents, Carroll and Jewell Poole, preceded her in death. One sister, Betty Poole, also preceded Erbie's death.

Erbie was united in marriage to Bobby Lavon "Sonny" Smart on September 10, 1949. Two children were born to this marriage. Sonny preceded her in death on May 1, 1987.

She is survived by her son, Rickey Lynn Smart of Greenway and his special friend, Linda Riddle, along with daughter Gayle Benson and her husband, Ronnie, of Rector.

She also leaves three grandchildren, Rhonda (Benson) Ellis and husband, John, of Conway; Kevin Benson and wife, Lori, of Bryant, Ark., and Dana Leigh Smart of Piggott. She also leaves two great-grandsons, Ethan Spencer Ellis and Austin Trevor Ellis of Conway. Survivors also include brothers Gerayne Poole, Jim Poole and Don Poole of Piggott, and her sister, Sheila Poole of Pollard. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and friends.

Erbie was a born-again Christian who loved the Lord and served Him faithfully during her lifetime. She was a member of Hopewell General Baptist Church in Greenway, where she taught Sunday School and worked at any place there was a need. She sang in a church quartet with husband Sonny and friends, Bill and Bessie Fielder and Otis Book.

Erbie taught school prior to her marriage and then worked beside her husband on the family farm for many years. After they left the farm, she served as Deputy County Clerk with husband Sonny and then became Clay County Clerk, finishing the elected term of County Clerk upon Sonny's death.

Erbie was a servant of Christ and her fellow man. She was always ready to serve others. She spent her last years at Evergreen Nursing Center in Rector after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Erbie departed her life on July 28, 2009, at Piggott Hospital. She was laid to rest on August 1, 2009, in Piggott Cemetery beside her husband with Marston Carpenter officiating.

She was carried to her place of rest by her son Rickey, son-in-law, Ronnie, grandson, Kevin, grandson-in-law, John, and great grandsons, Ethan and Austin. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of arrangements.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
