Lady Mohawk volleyball underway

The Piggott Lady Mohawk volleyball team will begin the 2009 season on the second day of the school year, as they'll travel Harrisburg Thursday afternoon to take part in a Jamboree. The squad is scheduled to take on Jonesboro High at 5:30, and will meet Paragould at 6:30 with their last match against Westside set for 7 p.m. The Tribe, under the direction of longtime coach Melissa Williams, will then host Paragould Tuesday, Aug. 25 and Pocahontas on Thursday, Aug. 27 with all teams playing. Both those matches are scheduled to get underway at 4:30 p.m. in the PHS gym.

The Lady Mohawks next matches will be played at Crowley's Ridge Academy Tuesday, Sept. 1. The following Thursday, Sept. 3 they'll host Walnut Ridge and Tuesday, Sept. 8 the teams will travel to Ridgefield Christian.

Thursday, Sept. 10 the Harrisburg Lady Hornets will visit PHS and that weekend, Saturday, Sept. 12 the senior girls will travel to Harrison to take part in this year's Slamfest.

Sept. 14 the girls will visit Bay and Sept. 15 they have a conference match at Brookland. They'll also be in action Sept. 17 at home against Hoxie and Sept. 18-19 the junior squad will compete in a tournament at Valley View.

The schedule continues Sept. 22 with a home match against CRA, followed by a visit to Harrisburg Thursday, Sept. 24. That weekend, Saturday, Sept. 26, the senior Mohawks will take part in the annual Playday at ASU.

Ridgefield Christian will visit Piggott Monday, Sept. 28 and the Lady Mohawks visit Hoxie Monday, Oct. 1. Later that week, Saturday, Oct. 3 the junior girls will play in a tournament at Brookland.

The Tribe hosts Bay Monday, Oct. 5 and the next day, Tuesday, Oct. 6 the Lady Bearcats of Brookland travel to PHS with all teams playing. The junior and senior A and B squads will visit Walnut Ridge Thursday, Oct. 8 and the senior A and B teams will visit Paragould Monday, Oct. 12.

The senior district will be played Oct. 17 and 19 at Crowley's Ridge Academy, with matches played on that Saturday and Monday. Then, on Tuesday, Oct. 20 the senior A and B teams will close out the regular season with a match at Greene County Tech in preparation for the state tournament at Harrison Oct. 27-29. Due to a change in Arkansas Activities Association rules there will not be a junior tournament this year.

The state finals will be played at Westside High School at Jonesboro on Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31.
