The Piggott Mohawks will kick-off their 2009 football campaign with a visit to Valley View this Friday night, kickoff as the Tribe takes on the non-conference Blazers is set for 7:30.

Last year the two teams met for the first time ever in only the second year of Valley View's varsity program. Meeting on Piggott's Parker Field in both team's season-opener the Blazers took the win 21-6. They then went on to finish with a record of 5-5, and tied for fifth in the very tough 4A-3 conference that includes such powerhouses as Newport, Osceola and Gosnell.

After dropping games to those three, along with Bald Knob and Trumann, the Blazers closed out the season by winning three of four..with victories at Highland and against Pocahontas and Westside. Their fifth victory of the season came in week two as they downed the Corning Bobcats at home 28-0.

The Blazers returned five starters from each side of the football, including junior QB Taylor Lindley who took over the job around mid-season and still managed over 770 yards and 10 touchdowns in pass production. Those seeing playing time in the backfield will include Ron Hubbard, Kameron Aceret, twins Dylan and Kevin Bosze and Kyle Biggers. The receivers will include Daniel Jarchow, Daniel Martin and Jordan Howard. Primarily the offense will run spread formations, and the passing game will be something to contend with.

The Blazers will feature several defensive sets, with junior Austin Van Horn moving to the noseguard spot. Also returning will be Hubbard at a linebacker spot, along with Bryan Neal, Jack Ellington, Kevin Bosze, Logan Hay and Colby White. The defensive backfield is fairly well experienced, and returns free safety Rollin Jaggers who led the conference with seven interceptions last year.

Despite the home field advantage, the Mohawks should match-up well with the Valley View squad as they look for a win in their first game of the season. The football field is located near the high school campus, which is just east of U.S. Highway 49 on the south edge of Jonesboro.

All I have to say is that I thought I was ready the Piggott Times and not the Jonesboro Sun. The whole first part of the article is nothing but VV. Plus where is the Volleyball article?
