Tennis teams sweep Harrisburg

The Mohawk tennis teams swept Harrisburg in conference action last Monday, Aug. 31 in a match played at Jonesboro. With the wins the girls team moves to 1-0-1 on the season while the two-man boys squad is 2-0.

In girls singles action it was Haley French over Nicki Pierce 6-0, Alex Scheffler downed Tori Smith 6-1, Emily Graddy got by Taylor Lattimore 6-0 and Taylor Covert beat Ashlin Kasner 6-0 while Elizabeth Ermert dropped her set to Kasey Crawford 4-6.

In doubles play it was the team of Graddy and Scheffler over Pierce and Smith 6-1 while the duo of Hallie Vannada and Lauren Brown beat Lattimore and Crawford 6-3 to complete the win.

In boys action the Piggott pair swept the Hornets with Beau Alex beating Steven Orr 6-2, Cale Redman 6-0 and Kyle Mitchell 6-0. Meanwhile, senior Mark Greaney downed Dakota Tucker 6-1 and Andrew Rouse 6-0. In doubles action the pair beat Orr and Redman 6-1 and Tucker and Rouse 6-0.

Beau Alex also won the United Cerebral Palsy tennis tournament held Aug. 29 and 30 in Jonesboro, taking the title in the 14 and under age group with a perfect 6-0 record in the round-robin format.

The girls team was scheduled to host Caruthersville last Tuesday, Sept. 1, but that match has been rescheduled for next Monday, Sept. 14 at the municipal courts in Piggott. Both the boys and girls will play in a tri-match at Pocahontas next Tuesday, Sept. 15 as they square off with the host Redskins and the Highland Rebels.
