Because of her willingness to help others, Hayes was presented the Arkansas National Guard's Outstanding Volunteer of the Year award during a special ceremony last weekend. Hayes was personally presented with the award by Adjutant Gen. William D. Wofford.
"I'm still surprised by it," Hayes said. "I'm not sure it's really sunk in yet. I'm very honored by all of this."
Hayes was chosen for the award from volunteers across the entire state.
The award wasn't presented on a whim. Hayes has repeatedly shown her dedication to the 39th and other area soldiers through her extensive work with the 39th's Family Readiness Group and Operation DadBags, as well as countless hours spent organizing various events for soldiers and their families.
Experiencing military life through the sacrifices required by her husband, Joel, a sergeant in the 39th, Hayes knows just how demanding life can be for a soldier and their loved ones.
"Anything I can do to make a soldier's family's life easier, that's what I'm there for," Hayes said. "Being there is especially important during deployment. I've been through it, so I know just how difficult that time can be."
Hayes said she began her volunteer work in 2004, when the 39th was deployed to Iraq for the first time.
"To me, volunteering is important because I'm giving to soldiers and their families when they need it most. I could never do what a soldier does, so I try my best to help in whatever ways I can. For me, helping out back home is the least I can do."
Hayes will bring her strong volunteer background to soldiers throughout the state with her recent appointment to the Arkansas Volunteer Advisory Council. She was one of five volunteers from the state chosen by Gen. Wofford to serve on the council. The group will help coordinate volunteer efforts throughout the state.
"I'm excited to be a part of the Advisory Council. I'm looking forward to working with everyone in order to do all we can for our soldiers and their families."
