He was born Sept. 22, 1921, in Pike County to John Daniel Self and Mary Keller (Williams) Self. He married Callie Wisenhunt and had lived in Holly Grove for 63 years. He was a Baptist minister and was pastor of Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer.
He worked for 25 years at the Mohawk Tire factory in Helena, Ark. His hobbies were woodworking and gardening, but his passion was his ministry.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Tony, Dewell and Earl Self; two sisters, Delsie Moran and Mary Jenny Moran, and a granddaughter-in-law.
He is survived by his wife, Callie (Wisenhunt) Self; two sons, James Adrian Self and wife Elaine of Little Rock, and Danny Mack Self and wife Pat of Piggott; ten grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Clarendon with Bros. Danny Self, Monty Self and Todd Self officiating. Burial was in the Macedonia Cemetery at Holly Grove with Brown Funeral Home of Clarendon in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were James Scott Self, David Michael Self, John Adrian Self, Steven Mark Self, Matthew Wayne Self and Jason Daniel Self.
