The Piggott junior Mohawks extended their season record to 6-2 last Thursday as they beat the Manila Lions 8-0 on a rain and wind-swept night at Parker Field. On the game workhouse running back Cody Mantz finished with over 100 yards rushing, pushing him to over 1,000 yards on the season.

With a driving rain falling, and temperatures falling, the Tribe hosted the young Lions in conference play. And not surprisingly neither team was able to move the ball with any regularity, although the Mohawks did squander several opportunities, "on the game we had the ball inside their 20 like ten times, but we kept making mistakes or turning it over," junior coach Michael Harrell said later.

But the Tribe was able to finally find paydirt in the third quarter as Mantz broke off a 59 yard touchdown run. The sturdy RB then tacked-on the two-point conversion and the final score was set.

On the night the Mohawks had 174 yards in total offense, while the Lions finished with 103. Mantz again paced the Piggott offensive attack with 113 yards on 13 carries as he eclipsed the century mark. He'll have another opportunity to add to that total this Thursday night as the junior Mohawks close-out the regular season on the road at Corning. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and unlike the season opener at Parker Field where the Tribe shut-out the Bobkittens by several touchdowns, this week's game is a conference contest.

Seventh grade falls to Lions

For the first time in two years the Piggott seventh grade football team lost a game last Thursday night. The seventh grade squad, which last lost to Hoxie when this year's Freshman were in the seventh grade, fell 14-8 to a Lion team that included a sprinkling of eighth graders. Bradley Stevens had the lone score for the Tribe in the loss.

The seventh grade Mohawks will wrap up their season Thursday afternoon with a 5:30 p.m. kickoff at Corning as they take on the Bobkitten seventh grade squad.
