Hayes is well-known for her volunteer efforts. She was chosen as the 2009 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by the Arkansas National Guard. She has been a vital part of the Family Readiness Group for the 39th Infantry Brigade, as well as Operation Dadbags.
Hayes also is serving on the Arkansas Volunteer Advisory Council. She was one of five volunteers from the state chosen by Adjutant General William D. Wofford to serve on the council. The group will help coordinate volunteer efforts throughout the state.
Hayes' nomination for the award was approved by the Arkansas Department of Human Services Division of Volunteerism which, along with KARK-TV and the Office of the Governor, has been recognizing individuals and companies for their volunteer efforts since 1978.
"I'm honored by this," Hayes said of her nomination. "I certainly wasn't expecting this at all. The nomination was a surprise, but I was shocked when I learned I was a finalist."
Hayes now is among the group from which a winner will be announced in July during KARK's annual Community Service Awards event. The program will be televised, with footage of the overall winner and monthly finalists shown.
Hayes was interviewed by producer Dave Woodman when she was announced as a finalist. Although the recognition is well deserved, Hayes says she is somewhat uncomfortable with being praised.
"You volunteer because you care and want to help others," Hayes said. "It's not something you do for any kind of recognition. Being the wife of a soldier, I've experienced military life first-hand and I wanted to do what I could to help others who are adjusting to the lifestyle and the demands which go along with it."
