Stephanie DeMent and Clinton Haley are easily recognizable as natural leaders. In fact, their ability to shine in both academics and athletics has led to the two seniors being named as state finalists in the 2009 Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

Haley and DeMent are among just 20 young men and women in Arkansas to be named as finalists.

Unlike its collegiate namesake, the award is not based solely on athletic prowess. To be eligible, students must be entering their senior year of high school (when first nominated), maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and participate in at least one sport recognized by the National Federation of State High Schools.

DeMent and Haley more than meets the requirements. Both currently have a grade point average higher than 4.0, the result of taking advanced placement classes. Both students have excelled in classes throughout their time as students, earning many academic awards and acknowledgements. When graduation night arrives, Haley and DeMent will most likely be among those named as scholarship award winners due to their hard work in the classroom.

The two teens also are hard workers in athletics.

DeMent was named All-Conference a year ago in softball for her play at shortstop. She also was named Defensive Player of the Year in softball and Outstanding Offensive Player for her point guard abilities in basketball during the 2008 RHS Athletic Banquet.

Haley was named All-Conference in 2008 as a linebacker for the Cougar football team. He also is a valued member of the Cougar basketball and baseball teams, bringing his work ethic and leadership skills to both programs.

The application process is a trying task in itself. Each had to provide a detailed list of activities and write two essays.

Both students say their announcement as finalists is an honor.

"I was a little bit shocked," DeMent said. "I know there are a lot of people who applied, so being named a finalist makes me feel good about about myself."

"Any time you're recognized by something like this, it makes you realize how your hard work pays off in the end," Haley said. "It encourages you to do the best you can."

State winners will be announced Saturday, Nov. 7, on the program's website, www.wendysheisman.com. Twelve national finalists soon will be named from the state winners. The 12 national finalists will be invited to New York City in December to take part in an awards banquet and several activities.
