Junior Lady Mohawks
The junior girls played in the 4 p.m. contest, and the first of the four games set for Thursday night. In the early going Marmaduke jumped out to a lead, and never looked back. Scoring by period had the Hounds up 14-4 after one, and leading 24-8 at the halftime intermission. The home squad extended their lead to 17-51 with a big third quarter and cruised to the win 58-23.
Kacey Crossfield led the junior Mohawks with six points, while Hannah Wagster and Melinda Blackmon each had five.
Senior Lady Mohawks
The Lady Mohawks continue to have trouble shooting in the early going of this year's basketball season, and the drought has resulted in some lopsided scores. Thursday night the Mohawks visited Marmaduke and dropped a 25-57 non-conference game to the Lady Greyhounds.
Starting slow, as they have so far this year, the Mohawks found themselves trailing 3-19 at the end of the first quarter. In the second frame they began to find some rhythm, and by the halftime break pulled to 14-33. But the Marmaduke defense picked-up the pressure in the second half, as they outscored the Tribe 24-11 in the final two periods.
Penny McCluskey and Sheleen Johnson each had seven points in the loss, Jana Corter finished with five, Allison Gurley had three and Taylor Coomer and Breanna Wright had two points each. Morgan Hatcher led the Lady Greyhounds in the win with 18.
Lady Mohawks visit Corning
Monday night the Lady Mohawk junior and senior girls traveled to Corning for a conference showdown with the Bobcats.
In the varsity contest the Lady Bobcats, who are picked by many to win the conference, posted a 61-32 victory over the Mohawks as they moved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference.
Leading the way for the Mohawks in the loss was Breanna Wright with 14, while Sierra Scheffler was top scorer for Corning with 13.l
The Lady Mohawks are scheduled to return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 as they visit Crowley's Ridge Academy at Paragould. They'll return to the friendly confines of the PHS gym Monday, Nov. 23 as they host Tuckerman. The squads will then be off until Dec. 1 when both teams will be playing in the Pre-Holiday Tournament at Weiner.
