1969

The Piggott Mohawks fell to the Augusta Red Devils 8-49 in their playoff game Nov. 22 at Kays Stadium at ASU. The Tribe's only score came on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Johnson to Gary Wiley, and Rick Rodery added the two-point conversion. The coaches singled out the defensive play of Bill Threet, Rodery, Kenny Payne and Van Winton and noted the impact of the loss of fullback Gary Mann earlier in the season. Meanwhile, Dorothy Dehls took the second annual Sugar Creek Country Club Ladies Tournament with a score of 180.

Debbie Kimbrell was Greenway homecoming queen for 1969, and her court included--Sheila Branson, Janet Melner, Bonnie Smith and Linda Wheat. The Tigers lost the junior game, but won the varsity contest over Knobel 68-60 led by Terry Weatherford.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the features include "The Devil's 8" along with "McKenna's Gold" and "Sam Whiskey."

In service news, Terry McComb, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley McComb of Piggott, was discharged Nov. 2 after spending a year in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Army.

Barry McKenzie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim McKenzie of Piggott, is now working as a DJ for WNAG radio in Granada, Miss. He previously spent time at KBIB in Monette, KPOC in Pocahontas and KTCB in Malden. And births to announce include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Leland Gibson Nov. 20 at Piggott Hospital. They've named the new arrival Amy Joyce Gibson.

1979

Two young men were arrested 30 years ago this week in connection with a break-in that occurred at the Piggott National Guard Armory Nov. 19. The thieves got away with around $180 by breaking into vending machines in the building. Meanwhile, the annual Piggott Mohawk Booster Club's annual sports dinner is set for Dec. 1.

Lesa Featherston was named homecoming queen at Greenway High School for 1979, and her court included maids--Lisa Bond, Karen Bridgeman, Teresa Mikel, Kelli Benson, Deneika Harris and Tina Green. Meanwhile, Todd Watson was king at the Piggott FHA annual Sadie Hawkins Week. The other finalists were Kevin Sutfin, Kevin Peace, Leslie Garner and Steve Eubanks. Winners of the Mammy Yokum and Lil' Abner look-alike contest were Valerie Crossfield and James Latimer.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "The Amityville Horror."

Junior Girl Scouts are helping with the Christmas Seal effort this year, and were pictured with leader Rose Crafton. The group included--Kathy McKleskey, Angelia Burns, Tanya Rucker, Teresa Hardin, Tracy Heritage, Latracia Tanner, Candice Poole, Jill Donner, Renee Duckworth, Peggy Baber and Tina Stark.

From the ads, Toy Town will be open at Roeder's Ben Franklin store just in time for Christmas shopping. Specials included either Monopoly or Sorry for just $5.77, "My Dog Has Fleas" game for just $8.97 and Star Wars action figures were just $1.97 each.

And Taylor's Liberty Foods had pork steak for 89-cents a pound, while a quart of Miracle Whip would set you back $1.29.

1984

With the announcement of the imminent closure of Brown Shoe Company, this week's paper included a feature on several longtime employees. Those interviewed included--Eulas and Martha Long, Armenda and Dewey Boyd, Thomas and Mary Benefield and Dennis Gibson. This week also included a feature on Kenneth Renshaw, who will be coordinating the Piggott Christmas concert Dec. 2 at the First United Methodist Church.

Speaking of Christmas, rain forced the postponement of the annual Piggott Christmas parade in the past week, and it has been re-scheduled for Monday, Dec. 3. Also in the news, Jack and Mary Byrd have purchased Piggott Florist from Leon and Carol Tate...although Carol will still be working some part time for the new owners.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "The Wild Life."

This year's crop report indicates that only 80-percent of the cotton has been picked so far, compared to 90-percent for the same date in 1983. Meanwhile, just 71-percent of the soybeans are harvested, compared to 87-percent last year and only 43-percent of the winter wheat has been planted, compared to 91-percent the previous year.

Members of the district champion junior Lady Mohawk volleyball team were honored, and All-District picks included--Deanna Conley, Amie Binkley, Tina Jones and Kim Grimes. The remaining members of the team for coach Donna Clark were--Tabitha Garver, Tonya Reagan, Ambra Wade, Kathy Bland, Sherry Estes, Belinda Jordan, Sheila Nagy, Rhonda Jenkins and Melanie Donner.

1989

Topping the news this week was the arrest of David Reagan, 22, of Pollard in connection with the death of his girlfriend's two year old daughter, Sarah Binkard. Also in the news, Harold Jinks of Piggott was honored by the Arkansas Democratic Party at a gathering in Little Rock.

Several local teens were injured, two of them seriously, in a single vehicle crash Nov. 24. near Piggott. Mitchell Purdom, 17, and James "Charlie" Poole, 16, of Piggott were severely injured...while Lori Poe, 16, of Piggott and Tammy Herring, 17, of Holcomb escaped with minor injuries.

The Piggott Times earned a top advertising award for 1989, and was recognized at the Arkansas Press Association meeting in Little Rock. Meanwhile, the annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas celebration will be held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1 and 2. Also in the news, this year's farm prices are down according to the USDA, with corn falling to $2.25 a bushel from 1988's $2.70, and officials noting that soybeans are down $2.50 a bushel from the previous year.

PES third grade students learned about Thanksgiving recently, and pictured were "Pilgrims" Justin Winchester and Emily Harmon along with "Indians" Aaron Johnson and Kevin Causey. And the new Sue's Flowers and Gifts building is near complete across from Hoggard and Sons. Cox Lumber is the builder, Dallas Pollard the contractor and the Holcomb brothers did the brick work.

The Mohawks dropped games to Pocahontas and CRA in the past week, with Scott McCrillis and Chris Lewis leading the scoring. Meanwhile the girls fell to Clay County Central with Tammy Belote pacing the seniors and Nikki Pounds leading the juniors in scoring.
