He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Piggott. He served 23 years as member of the Clay County Quorum Court, worked for Veal Oil Company for 19 years and farmed most of his life. He was on the Mitchell Cemetery Association Board, was a member of the Greenway Fire Department and had previously served as Mayor of Greenway.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Berrice Rue and Nora Margaret (Johns) Jeffress.
He is survived by his companion, Diane Walker, and stepdaughters, Amy Campos (Michael) of Santa Rosa, N.M., and Kim Clayton (Jonathan) of Jonesboro. He is further survived by his siblings, Brenda M. Ward of Kennett, Allen Jeffress of Kennett, Peggy Slaughter (Michael) of Piggott, and Ann McCord (Rick) of Paragould; nieces and nephews, Amanda Ward, David Jeffress (Nina), Carolyn Reyes (Johnny), Travis Slaughter, Eric McCord (Meghan), Jason McCord and Justin McCord; great-nieces and nephews, Jacob, Jenny and Jodie Reyes, and Elijah McCord; soon-to-be great-nephew Jace Lawson McCord, and step-grandchildren, Joseph and Isaiah Campos.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 19, in Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Kevin Murray officiating. Burial was in Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway. Pallbearers were Bob Tracer, Bill Veal, Darren Burdin, Van Taylor, Luke Hollis and Steve Baker. Honorary pallbearers are Don Walker, Tom Walker, Dell Walker, Joe Walker, Tony Walker, Roger Walker and Gene Walker. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.
