Junior boys fall at Corning

Wednesday, December 2, 2009
The Piggott junior Mohawks let a game slip away from them last Tuesday at Corning, as the Bobkittens came from behind to post a 37-36 win over the Tribe. This Tuesday the Mohawks were scheduled to take on Harrisburg, but due to the football playoffs that game will be re-scheduled later in the season.

As they have in several games this year, the junior Mohawks jumped out to the early lead on the home team but faded down the stretch. Luke Brewer was the only player in double figures for the Tribe with 10.

A combination of a hot hand early, and cold shooting by the Bobkittens, left the Mohawks leading 13-2 at the end of the first quarter. In the second frame the Tribe extended that lead to 21-9.

In the third quarter Corning began to fight their way back into the ballgame, and by the end of the third quarter the Mohawk lead had shrunk to 32-28. The Bobkittens then went on to outscore the Tribe 9-4 in the fourth quarter to take the win.

Along with 10 points for Brewer, Logan Murray had 7, Collin Benbrook finished with 6 and Austin Murray had 5 in the loss. Daniel Crossen paced the Corning effort with 12 on the game. As a team the Mohawks were five of 11 from the free-throw line, while Corning converted on nine of 12 attempts.

With the loss the junior Mohawks fall to 1-4 overall, and 0-3 in conference play. They're scheduled to take on the Brookland Bearcats at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7 in the Pre-Holiday Tournament at Weiner. With a win they'll play the winner of the Bay-Weiner contest at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11. With a loss, they'll take on the loser of that same game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10.

Seventh Grade Mohawks

The Piggott seventh grade Mohawks played their first game of the season last Tuesday at Corning, and fell 22-42.

Leading the way for the seventh grade squad was Hunter Massey with 6, while Nickolas McKinnie had 5 and Nick Stallings finished with 4. Dalton Carpenter led the Bobkittens, who had already played several games this season, with 18.
