1969

First Lt. Alvin Royce Williams indicated that the Piggott National Guard Armory got a good report from their recent inspection. The armory is home to Company A (pt), 2nd battalion of the 153rd Infantry of the Arkansas Army National Guard. Also in the news, Lions Club president Dorris Cox reports that over $800 was raised by their TV auction to help pay for lighting and sound equipment for the PHS gym.

Postseason honors abound for members of the Piggott Mohawk football team. Named as All-District were--quarterback Jimmy Johnson, tackle Bill Threet, offensive tailback Rick Rodery and defensive halfback Gary Mann. Johnson also was named outstanding back, and got the most votes for All-State and All-Star honors.

At the Carolyn Theater the features included "Some Kind of a Nut" along with "Guns of the Magnificent Seven" and "Lady in Cement."

The State Police warned motorists about drunk driving, noting that 5,241 arrests had been made in the first 10 months of the year. Under state law a blood alcohol content of .10 would mean a violation. Also in the news, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Conley of Pollard will celebrate their 50th anniversary Dec. 7 at their home.

The Mohawk band honored their seniors, which included--Pam Camp, Pelecia Graddy, Freddie Mack, Connie Pobst, Francine Hogard, Donna Hughes, Ronnie Dixon, Judy Cox, Vicky Johnson, James Lack and drum major Melinda Hampton.

At the U-Save-Mart they had Vitalis for 37-cents a bottle, and eight-inch glass ashtrays for just 77-cents.

1979

Link Fuller was the keynote speaker at the annual Mohawk Booster Club dinner. Fuller, a 1969 PHS grad, was employed by the Dallas Cowboys and served as defensive coordinator for the Garland High School football team. In a related story, Mohawk football players Jay Blackshare and Kevin Morris were named as All-District selections from 2AA-North, while Brent Simpson and Brad Wright were honorable mentions.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Joey Riddle was damaged by fire in the past week, possibly caused by a faulty furnace. And the Rock-N-Roll jamboree at the Home for the Golden Years was a big success. Top fundraisers were Mary Joiner and Nannie Purdom.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "Skatetown U.S.A." while the late show was "Sugar Cookies."

The Piggott School board approved the purchase of several large band instruments at their regular meeting, and the board voted to begin offering baseball during the 1980-81 year. In other action, Junell Johnson was hired as a bus driver.

William and Hallie Roden closed their grocery store north of Holly Island Dec. 1, 1979, 30 years to the day from when they first opened the business in 1949. The Roden's store was located at the turn-off to Nimmons, and during their years in business they were instrumental in getting Highway 139 paved.

In sports, the Mohawks split with the Neelyville Tigers, while the Lady Mohawks fell to Salem and Highland. Meanwhile, the Greenway Tigers beat a couple of Bootheel teams, as they notched wins over the Cooter Wildcats and the Southland Rebels.

1984

Dedication of the new Piggott Library is set for Sunday, Dec. 9 and the facility will open for regular business the following day. The 5,000 square foot facility will feature over 16,000 volumes and audio-visual items. Also in the news, the Piggott City Council has asked Prier Brass to vacate after learning that the company is only maintaining a staff of five people in the city-owned building they rent (next to the current Piggott Community Center).

The annual Piggott Christmas parade was a big success, and leading the way was Grand Marshall Larry Holcomb and wife Judy. Meanwhile, winners of the Cabbage Patch dolls given away at the annual Christmas celebration were Dina Williams and Maria Tate, with Cynthia Adams accepting on behalf of Williams.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "The Razor's Edge" while the late show featured "Private Teacher."

Who's Who has been selected and this year's Miss PHS is Melissa Hardcastle, while Thad Hinkle was chosen as Mr. PHS.

The Mohawks fell to Paragould and Hoxie in the last week, despite 23 and 19 points from Dane Coomer in those losses. Meanwhile, the junior boys fell to Paragould, but beat Hoxie on a last second shot by John Rodery. In girl's action, the Lady Mohawks fell to Walnut Ridge 46-53, while the junior girls dropped their game to the Bobcats 26-37.

Speaking of Bobcats, don't forget that all bobcat and otter pelts must be tagged before being taken out of the state. The AGFC notes that 581 otter were harvested in 1983, and 1,281 bobcats.

1989

Fire destroyed Featherlight Oak Products on East Jackson in Piggott. The company provided parts for the main Featherlight Lamp manufacturing facility on South Third Street. Meanwhile, formal charges have been filed against David Reagan and Renay Binkard of Pollard in connection with the death of her two year old daughter.

By a vote of 6-3 the quorum court finally approved the 1990 budget, settling on a salary of $14,800 for juvenile officer Emma Pulliam. And winners of cash prizes at the annual Christmas Fest were, Marietta Meyers, Hulen Haywood and Vergie Green. Meanwhile, Holly Hartwell was crowned Christmas Princess, Sarah Moody was Junior Christmas Princess and this year's Belle and Beau are Chandra Hart and Jake Jones.

GTE reports that their new digital switch will allow local residents to order new features, including--call waiting, call forwarding, three-way-calling and speed calling. And the Piggott Community Hospital Auxiliary held their annual tree lighting ceremony. Pansy Black had the honors of lighting the tree, which had been planted in memory of her husband Thomas.

Winners in the Chamber of Commerce window decorating contest were, first place Piggott Florist, second place Sue's Flowers and Gifts and third place was The Treasure Chest. An honorable mention went to Watson Furniture.

Jon Cooper's buzzer beater lifted the Mohawks over Clay County Central 54-53 in the past week, later the Tribe fell to Hoxie in overtime. Meanwhile, the Lady Mohawks dropped games to Highland and Walnut Ridge.
