A special awards assembly was held at Piggott High School in the past week to recognize the 2-A district football champion Mohawks. Coach Carl "Zig" Williams showed off the championship trophy and recognized players singled-out for post-season honors. And PHS principal Leslie Steele presented the coaches with a commemorative plaque.
The Piggott City Council voted to provide free electric to city customers for the month of December, joining many area municipalities in that practice. Residents would still be required to pay for their water and sewer services. Also in the news, Sondra Hill, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Hill suffered a broken collarbone during the recent powder puff football game at Parker Field.
Features at the Carolyn Theater this week included--"Green Slime" along with "The Odd Couple" and "Rosemary's Baby."
Births to announce included a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Max Poole Nov. 25 at Piggott Hospital. They've named the new arrival Candice Sue. And a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Buryl Petty of Greenway Nov. 27 at Kennett, and they've named their new arrival Edward Richard.
Piggott Order of Eastern Star has scheduled installation of officers, with Wayne and Beatrice Smith set as new Worthy Patron and Worthy Matron. Winners in the annual Belle and Beau pageant were Kelly Sanders and Mark Mathes, with Kellie Jones and David Moody as first alternates.
In sports, the Mohawks dropped A and B basketball games to Risco and a junior and senior game set to Rector. Monty Bellers paced the senior Tribe against the Blackcats, while Paul Hoggard led the junior squad in scoring.
1979
Gov. Bill Clinton appointed Bob Shanklin of Piggott to complete the term of JP in District Two to complete the term of the late W.G. Woolf. Also in the news, the Piggott City Council voted to re-name Ridegecrest Estates to Country Club Estates. The plan also called for the change of Sheri Lane to Country Club Road, and the north end of Sheri Lane to Wade Ave.
Meanwhile, the St. Francis City Council learned they've began the process of numbering houses in the town. They also voted to name the lone un-named street in the community Wright Street in honor of James Wright who drowned in 1971, dependant upon permission from Shirley Wright Knuckles.
At the Carolyn Theater this week, Bruce Lee in "Game of Death" and the late show was "Teeny Boppers."
Penny Hosea and Andy Dixon won this year's Belle and Beau contest, with first alternates Thrista Britton and Timmy Mowery and second alternates Shamala Tinsley and David Childers. PHS students were pictured helping out at a local daycare for class credit, and the group included Rita Yates, Janet DeMay and Sharon Stidham.
In sports, the Lady Mohawks fell to Walnut Ridge and split with Corning while the boys split with Hoxie and Paragould.
In the letters to Santa section was this offering;

Ribbon cutting for the new Piggott Public Library was held Sunday, Dec. 9 with Mayor George Cook joining library board members Don Roeder, J. B. Swift, Donna Seal, Shirley Magee, Tica Camp and Dorris Cox for the occasion. The library opened for business the following day. Meanwhile, interior work is underway on the new Piggott Middle School, and work should be complete in January. The school board recently approved the purchase of new desks and lockers.
Keri Tucker of Kennett and John Smart of Pollard won the Belle and Beau contest for 1984, first alternates were Autumn Dees and Kyle Johnson of Piggott while second alternates were Cynthia Adams of Piggott and Justin Hancock of Fagus.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "Oh God, You Devil" and the late show was "Getting Lucky."
Births to report included a son to Mr. and Mrs. David Mowery of Shreveport, La. on Dec. 8. They've named the new arriva Andrew Paul Mowery, and he was born at the Schumpert Medical Center in that city.
The Van Buren, Mo. high school choir will perform Dec. 19 at Piggott High School under the direction of Carolyn Terry. Mrs. Terry, a PHS grad, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Staples (and the namesake of the Carolyn Theater).
Gina Blume was chosen queen for spirit week at Piggott Schools, and in Who's Who, Brock Coomer was named Miss PHS while Patrick McNatt was Mr. PHS.
1989
The Piggott School Board approved participation in the Arkansas School Choice Act of 1989 at their recent meeting. Meanwhile, a small fire in a lighting fixture in the home economics building at PHS caused minor damage, and the evacuation of several classrooms in the past week. The blaze was reported by instructor Karen Coomer according to Fire Chief Bill Hogue.
Harold Jinks of Piggott was honored by the Arkansas Democratic Party at a banquet in Little Rock, recognized for a lifetime of service to the party. As the special guest, Jinks and wife Wilma were seated at the head table with Gov. and Mrs. Bill Clinton and Senator David Pryor.
Sue's Flowers and Gifts have scheduled a grand opening party for their new location Dec. 16. Also in the news, winners in the Chamber of Commerce lighting contest were--Mr. and Mrs. Don Ross, Jason Howell and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Poole.
Birth to announce include, a daughter born to Greg and Melissa Engle back on Oct. 27 at Chickasawba Hospital in Blytheville. The new arrival has been named Jordan Elyse.
This week included a feature on former Mohawk football coach "Zig" Williams getting his 200th win with the Mt. Grove, (Mo.) team. The article also noted that son Wade is now an assistant basketball coach at Piggott High, and how pleased the coach would be for his son to follow in his footsteps.
The Lady Mohawks fell to Corning and Hoxie with Cathy Eubanks leading the senior girls in scoring in both games. Brandee Chronister paced the junior girls against Corning while Donna Breckenridge and Nikki Pounds led the way in the Hoxie loss.
