What is Christmas?

Thursday, December 24, 2009
Christmas is a mix.

It's a wondrous celebration of the birth of the Christ Child.

Luke, Chapter 2, is the greatest story ever told.

Yet for some. the Christmas season brings sadness; a meloncholy.

It's a reflective time.as we remember Christmases past and loved ones who are no longer with us.

And sometimes the real meaning of Christmas gets lost.

A couple of weeks ago, Rev. Rob Welborn of First Baptist Church asked his congregation a question.

Are you hearing Christmas?

Really hearing Christmas?

Or is it being drowned out by the din of shoppers, ringing bells, twinkling lights and Santas?

Is the Christmas celebration being overshadowed by holiday parties, gift giving, decorating and wreaths.

Last night I heard on the news that the White House is decorated with 29 wreaths and on display is a 400-lb.gingerbread replica of the White House. The replica is made of white chocolate.

What is Christmas?

Are you seeing, hearing, feeling, and touching the spirit of Christmas?

At the birth of Christ, an angel of the Lord appeared to shepherds watching their flocks by night and said, "I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people."

"Today a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord."

Christmas Day is fast approaching.

Little children will awaken on Christmas morn eagerly awaiting what Santa has left for them under the tree.

There will be pandemonium as wrapping paper flies around the room and children whoop with glee.

At least that's how it will be in many homes.

In some, the gifts will be sparse.

In this tough economic time, many families have cut back on spending.

Families will gather as always to enjoy their family Christmas dinner.

Blessings will be said over food laden tables.

Perhaps there will be empty places where loved ones used to sit.

But it is a time of joy and great rejoicing.

Let us celebrate the Nativity.

Let us hear Christmas this year.
