Lady Mohawks vs Corning
The conference leading Corning Lady Bobcats visited PHS last Tuesday evening, and took home a 54-28 win over the Mohawks.
As the contest got underway at the PHS gym, the explosive Lady Bobcats jumped out to a lead and were up 5-17 by the end of the first quarter. They extended their lead to 8-36 by the halftime break, and were up 19-51 going into the final frame.
Heather Scott paced the Lady Mohawk attack on the night with 14 points, while Sheleen Johnson finished with 7. Chelsey Kilbreath had 20 for the Lady Bobcats in the win. As a team the Mohawks were an excellent 9 of 13 from the free-throw line, while Corning converted on just 5 of their 11 attempts.
Lady Mohawks at Tuckerman
The Lady Mohawks visited Tuckerman last Thursday night, and brought home a 36-32 conference win.
With their roster replenished, the Lady Mohawks were ready for their rematch with Tuckerman last week--and led throughout the contest. The girls jumped out on the Lady Bulldogs, and behind some tough defense, led by a score of 9-3 by the end of the first quarter. The Mohawks extended the lead to 20-12 by the halftime intermission, and held on during a third quarter run to lead 26-23 going into the final frame. In the fourth quarter they outscored Tuckerman 10-9 to hold on for the four point win.
Scott once again led the Mohawks with 14, while Taylor Coomer, Breanna Wright and Jana Corter all finished with six points. Amanda McGhee paced the Lady Bulldogs with 14 in the loss.
Lady Mohawks vs Rivercrest
Facing Rivercrest for the second time in just a couple of weeks, the Lady Mohawks made a good showing Monday night before falling to the Lady Colts by a final of 37-53.
As the contest got underway Breanna Wright had the hot hand, and scored two three-pointers and a deuce in the first few minutes to give the Mohawks an 8-0 lead. But, Rivercrest would respond--and Wright wouldn't score another point in the ballgame--as the Colts went on a 14-0 run of their own. That drought ended when Jana Corter made a couple of free throws off the bench, late in the first quarter.
By the end of the first frame the score stood 12-16 in favor of the Colts, but the Lady Mohawks hung with the visitors in the second quarter and still trailed by just four points at the break, 25-29.
Rivercrest came out in the third quarter and put on a run, extending their lead to nine by the end of the period as they were up 30-39. The Colts then put together a big fourth period, as they cruised to the win 37-53.
Breanna Wright and Corter each finished with eight points on the game, Coomer had seven and Allison Gurley finished with six off the bench. Aleta Cannon led the Rivercrest attack with 23 points in the win.
The senior girls are scheduled to visit Earle this Thursday, Jan. 21 and will host the Hoxie Lady Mustangs at PHS on Monday, Jan. 25.
